Tapie won his case and was awarded 293 Million Euros ($306 million), plus interest. Lagarde was accused of not challenging the award of the huge amount of taxpayers’ money. She is the third IMF managing director in a row to face legal proceedings

Man Arrested For Raping 11 Minors For Money Ritual

A young man who claimed he was instructed by an unnamed spiritualist to have anal sex with minors; both boys and girls, in order to acquire wealth has been arrested by the police in Enugu.
The suspect, one Esomchi Ojobo, a native of Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government of Enugu State, was apprehended after raping about 11 minors.
Ojobo was arrested in Opanda, a community in the Uzo-Uwani area of Enugu, on December 11.
Southern City News gathered that Ojobo’s victims, who were not named by the police, were aged 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 11 years.
It was learnt that Ojobo allegedly hypnotised the minors before raping them.
The Spokesman, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said that upon his arrest, Ojobo confessed that he used a white cloth to perpetrate the act.
According to Amaraizu, the white cloth was given to the suspect by an unnamed spiritualist, which he flashes on the faces of his targets.
He said, “The suspect explained that the little boy or girl would temporarily lose his or her senses after the dangling of the cloth on the person’s face and added that the victim would follow him to wherever he intended to perpetrate the crime.
“He also confessed that he was instructed to rape the minors through the anus in order to ‘collect their destinies’, which would in turn translate to immense riches for him.
“He (suspect) revealed that as soon as the white cloth is flashed on their (victims’) faces, they will lose consciousness and follow him to where he will abuse them through the anus for the purpose of reaping the victim’s destiny, which in turn boosts the process of his financial acquisition.”
However, Ojobo has not acquired the expected riches before his arrest.
But the suspect said he was yet to complete the ‘process’ as instructed by the spiritualist, before he was arrested.
Amaraizu said, “When asked whether he had started getting the money, the suspect maintained that he was still in the process and that the process needed to be completed before he would start reaping the monetary dividend as instructed.”
Amaraizu said the police had launched a full scale investigation into Ojobo’s activities, adding that the suspect had expressed regrets over his actions.

HOW MMM STARTED

МММ was a Russian company that perpetrated one of the world's largest Ponzi schemes of all time, in the 1990s. By different estimates from 5 to 40 million people lost up to $10 billion. The exact figures are not known even to the founders.

Russia
MMM was established in 1989 by Sergei Mavrodi , his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi, and Olga Melnikova. The name of the company was taken from the first letters of the three founders' surnames.
Initially, the company imported computers and office equipment. In January 1992, tax police accused MMM of tax evasion, leading to the collapse of MMM-bank, and causing the company to have difficulty obtaining financing to support its operations. Faced with difficulties in funding its foreign trade, the company switched to the financial sector. It offered American stocks to Russian investors, but met with little success. Later, MMM-Invest was created for the purpose of collecting vouchers during privatisation. This effort was similarly unsuccessful.
MMM created its successful Ponzi scheme in 1994. The company started attracting money from private investors, promising annual returns of up to one thousand percent. It is unclear whether a Ponzi scheme was Mavrodi's initial intention, inasmuch as such extravagant returns might have been possible during the Russian hyperinflation in such commerce as import-export.
MMM grew rapidly. In February 1994, the company reported dividends of 1,000%, and started an aggressive TV ad campaign. Since the shares were not quoted on any stock exchange and the company itself determined the share price, it maintained a steady price growth of thousands of percent annually, leading the public to believe its shares were a safe and profitable investment.
An important factor in the scheme's success was word of mouth , but most of the company's success came from its extremely aggressive ad campaign, which appealed to the general public by using "ordinary" characters that viewers could identify with. The most famous of them, a "folk hero" of early 1994, was Lyonya Golubkov . Another notable marketing effort was a giveaway of free Metro trips to all Moscow citizens on a particular day. MMM also was one of the first well-known companies in Russia with a logotype and slogans ("Flying from shadow to the light" and others).
At its peak the company was taking in more than 100 billion rubles (about 50 million USD) each day from the sale of its shares to the public. Thus, the cashflow turnover at the MMM central office in Moscow was so high that it could not be estimated. The management started to count money in roomfuls (1 roomful of money, 2 roomfuls of money, etc.).
Regular publication in the media of the rising MMM share price led President Boris Yeltsin to issue a decree in June 1994 prohibiting financial institutions from publicising their expected income.
The success of MMM in attracting investors led to the creation of other similar companies, including Tibet ,Chara , Khoper-Invest , Selenga , Telemarket , and Germes . All of these companies were characterised by aggressive television advertising and extremely high promised rates of return. One company promised annual returns of 30,000%.
On July 22, 1994, the police closed the offices of MMM for tax evasion. For a few days the company attempted to continue the scheme, but soon ceased operations. At that point, Invest-Consulting, one of the company's subsidiaries, owed more than 50 billion rubles in taxes (USD 26 million), and MMM itself owed between 100 billion and 3 trillion rubles to the investors (from USD 50 million to USD 1.5 billion). In the aftermath at least 50 investors, having lost all of their money, committed suicide .
Several organisations of "deceived investors" made efforts to recover their lost investments, but Sergei Mavrodi manipulated their indignation and directed it at the government. In August 1994 Mavrodi was arrested for tax evasion. However, he was soon elected to the Russian State Duma , with the support of the "deceived investors". He argued that the government, not MMM, was responsible for people losing their money, and promised to initiate a pay-back program. The amount ultimately paid back was minuscule compared to the amount owed.
In October 1995, the Duma cancelled Mavrodi's right to immunity as a deputy. In 1996, he tried to run for Russia's presidency, but most of the signatures he received were rejected. MMM declared bankruptcy on September 22, 1997.
While it was believed that Sergei Mavrodi left Russia and moved to the United States , it is possible that he stayed in Moscow, using his money to change apartments regularly and employ a group of former special agents.
Mavrodi was found and arrested in 2003. While in custody, Mavrodi was given until January 31, 2006 to read the documents in his fraud case against him (The criminal case consisted of 650 volumes, each 250-270 pages long). At the end of April 2007, Mavrodi was convicted of fraud, and given a sentence of four and a half years. Since he had already spent over four years in custody, he was released less than a month later, on May 22, 2007.
The MMM scandal led to increased regulation of the Russian stock market, but the legacy of the fraud led many to become extremely suspicious of any joint stock companies.

With the help of a distant relative he started a company Stock Generation., another pyramid scheme based around trading non-existent companies' stocks in a form of the "stock exchange game". Despite a bold-letter warning on the main page that the site was not a real stock exchange, between 20,000 and 275,000 people, according to various estimates, fell for the promised 200% returns and lost their money. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, losses of victims were at least USD 5.5 million.

South Africa
In 2015 MMM began operating in South Africa with the same business model as MMM-2011, claiming a "30% per month" return through a "social financial network". The group was identified as a possible pyramid scheme by the National Consumer Commission and accounts of clients were later frozen by Capitec Bank In response to mounting criticism and official investigations by state authorities in 2016 supporters of the South African MMM scheme staged a protest march in Johannesburg, and has started up again late November 2016.
Nigeria

In November 2015, MMM launched a website targeting the Nigerian audience, also claiming a "30% per month" return including other acquirable bonuses. The entity was self-described as a "mutual aid fund where ordinary people help each other." Money 2.4 million people had signed up by late 2016, with the country's unemployed as primary targets. Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed that they are monitoring the scheme.

China
In January 2016 the Chinese government banned MMM on the grounds that it is a pyramid scheme, (Ponzi scheme), and it is not registered in the country (and as a fraudulent scheme cannot be registered).

Rice smuggling flourishes in Lagos despite FG Ban.

The smuggling of rice through the land borders has continued to thrive in the Badagry area of Lagos State in spite of the Federal Government ban on the practice.
Markets along the Badagry Expressway close to Seme border are stocked with various varieties of smuggled rice, especially as the Christmas season approaches.
NAN reported a smuggler, who identified himself as Sunday Egeseme, offloading bags of rice from his car at Alaba Rago Market in Okokomaiko area of Lagos.
He described the business as “lucrative’’.
“We are messengers to the main owners of the goods who are in the Seme border.
“Transporting rice from Seme to customers in various location of the town is a fast moving business with good returns,” Egeseme said.
He, however, declined to say the exact amount it cost to ferry a bag of the commodity.
Egeseme, a driver, said that the Christmas period was the peak of the business as many families depended more on the consumption of rice.
At Doyin Bus Stop market before Navy Gate Market, Okokomaiko, a trader who could not find space at the Alaba rice market, was seen taking delivery of the product from smugglers.
A driver simply known as Taiwo, who was exchanging banters with his colleagues for a successful trip, said his target was to make a lot of money before the end of the season.
“I run three trips before morning breaks and two in the day time if the road is good.
“The security officers are there but we still find our way unless one is a new person on the route,” Taiwo said.
Celine Ukachi, a rice seller at the Navy Gate Rice Market, said, “we are used to selling the Cotonou rice because it is easy to get than the local ones.
“If we see the local ones, we sell together with the Cotonou one so that everybody who wants anyone can buy,” Ukachi said.
The trader also claimed she had been in the business for four years.

Dog eats new born baby abandoned in a village in Bauchi state

A dog was found by passersby, eating a new born baby that had been abandoned alive by its mother at a refuse dump at the Federal Polytechnic Student Village, Gwallameji, Bauchi State yesterday. An eye witness, who gave an account of the incident said:
“I was coming back from church when I saw many people behind a house away from ours. I became curious and went to see what was happening there.“What I saw there was disgusting and annoying. It was someone, who dumped a new born baby at a refuse dump and a dog was found eating it (the baby).
“From the look of things and from what I heard people say, the baby was abandoned alive but was killed by the dog.
“How can someone do this to an innocent child? How can a human life be treated with such levity? It’s so bad and inhumane.”
He said some of the people at the scene dug a shallow grave and buried the remains of the baby just beside the refuse site, but he didn't say what happened to the dog.
The traditional Chief of Gwallameji, Hassan Ibrahim, was contacted by Vanguard and he confirmed the incident.
He said:
“I got a call from someone informing me of the incident but I told the person that I was not around. When I called the number back, I was told that Wakilin Sarkin Gwallameji (representative of the chief of Gwallameji), Sanusi Mohammed, was already there. “Since he was there, I continued with what I was doing knowing that he would handle everything well. As I speak with you now, I haven’t met him yet for information on the incident.”
Horrible incidents like this case is reportedly becoming a norm. Less than 4 months ago, a dead body of a new born baby was found dumped in a polythene bag at a refuse dump in the same area.
This is so sad.

MMM founder Sergey Mavrodi writes Nigerian bloggers; 'Leave MMM alone!''

Sergey Mavrodi, the founder of Mavrodi Mundial Movement (MMM) has written an open letter to Nigerian journalists whom he claimed are causing unnecessary tension in the country with "provocative and worthless articles."
According to him, MMM will be back by January as earlier stated, hence the rumour about the scheme collapse should stop. Read the letter below:
"Dear journalists, “analysts” and all kinds of “experts”!Please stop using MMM to gain cheap popularity. Leave us alone and let us work without interference. I’m just astonished by your irresponsibility and cynical attitude. Interests of millions of people, your fellow citizens are at stake. Don’t you have any sympathy for them? Why are you fueling hysteria around MMM and provoking a panic? Why are you doing this so diligently and persistently, what is your purpose?
"In fact, absolutely all your provocative and worthless articles and “analyses” (I said “worthless” because you do not have any real information about what happens in the System, and might have never had; you simply invent everything, fabricate it) are merely negative: “MMM has collapsed!!!.. MMM will not be working in January!!!..” etc. Are you intentionally presenting all of it in such a manner and whipping up tension by any means possible in order to increase the ratings of your publications and attract attention to them? Don’t you care about people at all?
"So, nothing has collapsed, and MMM will safely resume its work in January, as announced. Suspension of work for holidays is a usual thing, merely working moment, no more than that. It would have remained a normal, just a part of the usual routine, and might have gone almost unnoticed if it were not for your totally cynical and irresponsible attempts to advertise yourself, create a scandal out of nowhere, and make the most of this news topic in any possible way.
"Again, leave MMM alone and let us work. Nothing has collapsed, and MMM will perfectly resume its work in January. We Can Change the World!"
Sergey Mavrodi
This is the second open letter the MMM founder Sergey Mavrodi has reportedly written in a week. On Monday, December 12, Sergey Mavrodi wrote to the Nigerian government, claiming that the scheme would never fail.
Only for MMM to freeze users' accounts a day later, promising to be back by January 2017.

About 1,000 armed bandits have surrendered their weapons and renounced armed banditry and other crimes in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara state.

Last week, political and military leadership had engaged the armed bandits and cattle rustlers in the state in a series of peace talks in the latest move to bring the wanton destruction of lives and property in the state to an end.
At the peace dialogue event on Sunday at Gidan Jaja village of Zurmi local government area, over about 1,000 armed bandits from 14 different camps in the local government area publicly renounced armed banditry and all sorts of crimes.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigeria Army, Kaduna, Major General Adeniyi Oyebade said the Army would not relent on its aggressive operation in the state until when the state is cleared of all armed bandits and other criminals terrorizing the state.
The GOC who was represented by the Brigade Commander, 1 Brigade Sokoto, Brigadier General G K Nwosu said the operation had started as part of the concerted efforts to resolve the issue of livestock rustling and armed banditry.
“Whether the bandits like it or not, armed banditry must stop in Zamfara state, therefore it is better for them to renounce all forms of crimes and surrender their weapons now or be forced to do so,” he warned.
Speaking on behalf of the 14 notorious camp leaders, Samaila Samaho Tsannu blames the neglect of the Fulani communities by the state government and unlawful killings of the Fulanis in the state by the volunteer vigilante known as 'Yan Sakai’ over false allegations as the roots of the reprisal attacks by the armed bandits.
"What will you do when some group of people just select your kinsmen, accuse them of stealing without any prove and kill them extra judiciously and the government is not doing anything to protect you or prevent the reoccurrence of the selective killings."
The bandit leader then urged the state government to provide basic amenities such earth dams, health centres, schools to make life comfortable for those in the rural areas particularly the herdsman.

Istanbul - A suicide car bomb targeting military personnel exploded at the entrance to a university in the central province of Kayseri on Saturday, killing 13 Turkish troops and wounding 55 other people, authorities said.
The blast comes a week after a car bomb attack claimed by Kurdish militants killed 44 people, mainly riot police posted outside a soccer stadium in Istanbul.
The army said 48 troops were among the wounded in Saturday's "treacherous attack." The state-run Anadolu Agency said the explosion was at the entrance gate of the Erciyes University, hitting a public transportation bus that included soldiers among its passengers.
Minister Suleyman Soylu, speaking in Kayseri, said six of the wounded were in critical condition.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the statements of top officials suggested suspicion was focused on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party,or PKK, which Ankara and the West consider a terrorist organisation.
Kurdish militants have claimed multiple attacks against soldiers and police across Turkey this year in violence that has also caused casualties among civilians.

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, Umaru Ibrahim, has said there is nothing else the agency could do except to offer prayers for the victims of the recently crashed Mavrodi Mundial Movement, MMM.

Ibrahim who spoke to Journalists over the weekend at the Workshop for Business Editors and Finance Correspondents in Kaduna said the Corporation would not relent in calling on Nigerians, sensitizing and enlightening them on the dangers of patronizing wonder banks.
He said beside the MMM case, there were some new cases of the emergence of the wonder banks in recent times in places like Enugu, Kaduna and Plateau states.
“For us, we already told Nigerians that MMM are not recognise, they are illegal, but some insisted that they are legal, all hands must be on deck to educate the public, today is MMM, tomorrow it could be YYY”, he said.

Senate’s Rejection: How DSS Lied Against EFCC Boss, Ibrahim Magu – Report

The Senate on Thursday declined to confirm Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following what it called a “security report” before it.
According to the report, which was sent to the Upper Chamber from the Department of State Security (DSS) , Magu had close ties with a retired naval officer, who the DSS described as a “questionable businessman who has subsequently been arrested by the secret service.”
PREMIUM TIMES has obtained details of the security report on which the lawmakers based their decision and has investigated the claims against Magu. According to a fact-check by the online medium, the allegations by the DSS are “untrue”.
Read the report below:
ALLEGATION ONE: That during the tenure of Farida Waziri as EFCC chairperson, sensitive documents were found in Magu’s home.
The facts do not support that claim. A reporter for this newspaper extensively reported that event in 2008 when it happened, and is familiar with what transpired at the time.
Based on pressure from political gladiators of the period (among which were former Governors
James Ibori and Bukola Saraki ), then President Musa Yar’Adua unceremoniously removed Nuhu Ribadu as chairman of the EFCC.
After Ribadu’s departure, his successor, Waziri, frustrated some of his closest and most resourceful aides in the commission, and harassed them for prolonged period.
Magu, who was a chief superintendent of police at the time, was sent away from the EFCC and his Lagos and Abuja homes were raided by operatives even before he had the opportunity to hand over to Umar Sanda as head of the Economic Governance Unit of the commission. He was later detained for three weeks.
Following complaints by Waziri, the then Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro , queried Magu, accusing him of serious misconduct. One of the allegations against him was that he removed and withheld EFCC files.
On August 25, 2008, Magu replied the query, explaining to the IGP that no unauthorized EFCC official documents were found in his home.
“I wish to state that the nature of my assignment at the EFCC is such that I worked round the clock and it was impossible for me to do my work effectively without working on some documents at home,” he wrote to Okiro at the time.
“This is the reason I maintain an office bag where documents relating to investigations were kept. The documents listed were found in my office bag which I was in the process of handing over and were not found hidden anywhere in my house.”
“It is therefore not the correct position to say that I bluntly refused to hand over EFCC’s property and documents. I had just concluded handing over the Abuja office and I was in Lagos to conclude handing over the Lagos office when the search was conducted. At the time of the search, I had not reported to my new command. It could therefore not be my intention to keep government documents in my house.”
“I have suffered untold humiliation within the past one month. My home was ransacked, vandalized and my properties destroyed by men of the EFCC. I was detained in a cell meant for hardened criminals most of whom are armed robbers for three weeks. My health condition deteriorated as a result of his inhuman treatment meted out to me for doing my job diligently and with the pride required of a senior police officer of my rank in the Nigerian Police Force.”
“I humbly implore the Inspector General of Police to totally exonerate me from blame and the said acts of serious misconduct because I was not involved and I am not involved. I will never be discouraged in my unrelenting war against crime and its associated manifestations as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Magu wrote.
After investigation, the police IG exonerated Magu, posted him to the police’s Special Fraud Unit and promoted him to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police shortly afterwards.
ALLEGATION TWO: That Magu currently occupies a residence rented for N40 million at N20 million per annum. This accommodation was not paid [for] from the commission’s (EFCC) finances, but by one Umar Mohammed, air commodore retired.
This claim is also untrue.
PREMIUM TIMES has obtained evidence showing the property in question was paid for by the Federal Capital Development Administration, and not Mr. Umar.
The E-Payment schedule, dated March 31, was issued by to the branch controller of Central Bank, Abuja, in favour of M/S Valcour SA Nigeria Limited.
The company was paid N39.628 million as payment for two-year rent and furnishing of the property, located in upscale Maitama district of Abuja.
The payment schedule was signed by Isiyaku Ismaila and confirmed by Zanna A. Hamza.
Magu lived in Karu, a suburb of Abuja, before his appointment as acting EFCC chair. With his new position, Magu moved into an official residence provided by the FCDA.
ALLEGATION 3: That the acting EFCC chairman regularly embarked on official and private trips through a private jet owned by embattled Air Commodore Mohammed Umar (Rtd).
PREMIUM TIMES checks show that this is not entirely correct. Our investigations indicate that Magu first met Umar when both of them worked as members of the Presidential Committee on the investigation of arms procurement. At the time, Umar was very close to President Muhammadu Buhari and had unlimited access to the presidential villa. Both men became close during the assignment.
Our investigations indicate that once this year, Magu travelled to Kano in company of EFCC’s director of finance and that in charge of organizational support. Those familiar with the trip said on their way back to Abuja, Umar, who at the time remained Magu’s colleague at the presidential committee, and who was at the time not in any trouble with the SSS, gave the two officials a lift.
We are unable to find any evidence that Magu flew in Umar’s private jet at any other time. Neither were we able to establish that the EFCC chairman flew to Maiduguri alongside Umar and a bank MD being investigated by the EFCC over complicity in funds allegedly stolen by former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke .
While some insiders at the commission denied the allegation, we could not independently verify the claims.
ALLEGATION 4: On 24 June, 2016, he (Magu) flew Emirate airlines first-class to Saudi Arabia to perform lesser hajj at the cost of N2.9m. This is in spite of Mr President’s directive to all public servants to fly economy class.
Insiders say while it was true that Magu indeed flew first class to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj, he did not pay for the ticket with public funds. We could not however confirm this claim independently.

Exposed! Lagos-based MMM ‘Billionaire’ Got Brand New SUV From Guiders

As apprehension over the fate of millions of participants in the Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox or
MMM mounts in Nigeria after accounts were frozen, information emerged that some individuals might have become far richer than anyone can expect.
Some, it was learnt, have been made millionaires by the platform, but in the case of few others like one of MMM’s top men, Chuddy Ugorji, the gain may have run into billions.
Ugorji, who is the number one guider on the platform, has been the subject of different speculations, some of which claimed he might have made more than N1bn over the last one year.
Social media pictures of him on luxury boat rides or at luxury spots might have a lot to do with his new found wealth.
On the MMM website, Ugorji shared his testimonies showing that he got millions of naira from people who had “provided help” to him.
A screenshot even showed that Ugorji got up to N6m at a point.
MMM runs in a peer to peer donation system, in which you “provide help” by donating money to another participant and “get help” by requesting for money after some days with a 30 per cent increase in the initial donation made.
Ugorji was said to have joined MMM’s global platform in 2015 and has been its spirited promoter in Nigeria ever since.
There is no doubt that since becoming MMM’s top man, life has not been the same for the Imo State indigene, who describes himself as an online entrepreneur and businessman on his Facebook account.

Recently, photographs from his recent wedding, which took place at the Elshadai Covenant Church, Abule-Egba, Lagos, emerged online, given the first peek at the life of an individual, who leaves one in no doubt that the platform has been wonderful to him.
His wife, Chiamaka, who has also been a spirited defender of MMM’s credibility, is a graduate of the Imo State University and an indigene of the state as Ugorji. Before her husband released a statement on the fears over MMM on Friday, Chimaka had consistently written on her Facebook, assuring participants that their investments were safe.
Ugorji’s wedding was attended by celebrities and other guiders of MMM. The apparently lavish weddingwas MMM-themed with guests wearing MMM-crested sashes, while even the couple’s cake bore the MMM logo. To cap the royalty of the wedding, entertainment at the reception was provided by the Limpopo crooner, Kcee.
The important position Ugorji occupies in the MMM community came to light when he revealed on his Facebook wall that MMM guiders presented him with a brand Hyundai Crete SUV as a wedding gift.
“Thank you to our wonderful family, friends and great MMM community for your love, support and generosity. Our wedding day was indeed made so much memorable because of your presence and your blessings, MMM Guiders surprised me with a brand new Hyundai Crete SUV Jeep as a wedding gift may God bless you all for me,” he said on Facebook on November 13.
Ugorji, a son of a reverend, is a graduate of one of India’s distant learning universities, Karnataka State Open University, where he studied Business Administration.
Despite refutations by Ugorchi, some Nigerians have suggested that he actually brought MMM to Nigeria.
A Twitter user, Amadi Noel, tweeted ago about an alleged deal between Ugorchi and a Philipino millionaire.
Ugorchi himself had shared a photograph he took with a woman he called Ritta on Facebook in January.
The photograph was apparently taken in Dubai, where he allegedly finalised his deal on MMM Nigeria.
“With Ritta my partner and leader, a great woman and multi-millionaire. Am blessed (sic) to work with such a successful leader because success is contentious,” Ugorji captioned the photograph.
But in a statement he shared on his Facebook wall on Friday, Ugorchi, denied having any deal with any Philipino, explaining that MMM Nigeria is run by Russian, Sergei Mavrodi and controlled in Russia.
“The MMM website is being managed in Russia by their control and supervisory team .They are responsible for every decision made, like pairing of participants to provide help and get help, resolving issues on the platform. I have never been to Philippines, the stories about going to the Philippines are untrue,” he said.
However, many sceptics say those who have money in the system should probably not hold their breath.
But Ugorji laid the blame for the panic about MMM following the freeze on accounts onthe doorstep of the media.

Ugorji’s wedding gift donated by MMM guiders
“Some ignorant Nigerians who don’t understand what MMM is all about have been brainwashed by the information broadcasted (sic) by the media and social networks. Bloggers who get paid for promoting rumour, when ignorant Nigerians click on their blogs, Google Ad Sense pays them per click. Hence they seized this opportunity to enrich themselves,” he said in his statement.
However, it is not just the high-level position of Ugorji in MMM that came to light over the last one week, there are claims that he might have made over N1bn in the last one year from MMM.
But he said that “(I) am not the administrator of MMM but one of the top guiders of this great community.”
As if to address the issue of how much he had made from the platform, he later states, “every guider in the MMM community has a limit to withdrawal and I have never made withdrawals above my limit.”
However, he maintained that the freeze on Mavro (MMM version of credits), was just a measure to prevent the actual collapse feared by participants.
According to him, that MMM has collapsed is far from the truth.
He said, “The reason for this measure is evident. The system needs to prevent any problems that might arise during this festive season and this measure will be cancelled once the festive season comes to an end.
Frozen of mavros does not mean MMM has stopped operations or crashed rather the system has adopted this measure to avoid any mishaps. The support system are working on issues to enhance the effectiveness of the community.”
But it is unclear whether his statement has done much to restore confidence of Nigerians in the platform. Some say all the participants need to learn as lesson is to look at how the scheme fared in other countries.
An audio message circulated by one of the ‘guiders’ in the scheme known as Alpha Romeo, indicates that at least three million Nigerians are participating in the scheme, a fact that puts in focus how massive the impact of an eventual collapse would be to Nigerians.
To put the impact in context, a Facebook user, Peter Sunday, shared a personal experience of the reaction of a policeman to the action taken by MMM administrators.
He said “We need to form prayer team to pray against suicide because of this MMM halt o. This is real. I entered a vehicle with a Mopol (mobile police) man who had been on duty since Friday and he was not aware of the MMM freeze.
“He overheard the driver and one of the passengers talking about MMM crash. All of a sudden he screamed ‘Haaaaaah! MMM crash? Haaaah. I dash money dem keep for my hand, I take put for MMM oooooooh. I am dead.’ The Mopol man then cocked his gun.”
Compared to Nigeria’s over three million participants, when MMM Zimbabwe collapsed few months ago, only about 66,000 participants fell victim. Still, it generated a nationwide heartache as many had sunk their life savings into the scheme.
A report by a Zimbabwean news website, TechZim, drew a comparison between the way the platform collapsed in the country and what is happening in Nigeria.
“In Zimbabwe, the first sign of MMM Zimbabwe coming to a halt was when the Reserve Bank effectively distanced itself from any activity outside of its regulatory scope. They were powerless to either stop MMM Zimbabwe or help those who could potentially be affected by its subsequent demise. Like in Nigeria, government agencies in Zimbabwe condemned the scheme at all fronts.
“This made a lot of MMM Zimbabwe participants wonder what exactly was going on to have made the Reserve Bank come out and say they have nothing to do with MMM, confidence still remained but eyebrows started to get raised.”
TechZim reports that rumours of a possible system crash instigated a wave of panic withdrawals which led to a pressure in the system forcing the administrators to reduce the worth of Mavro by 80 per cent. It started in April 2016 with the reduction in the Mavro growth rate from 50 per cent to 30 per cent and on to 20 per cent. Growth rate offered by MMM Nigeria is currently 30 per cent.
At the end of the day, the amount of PHs (Provide Helps)could not meet up with the GHs (Get Helps). That was the final straw for MMM Zimbabwe.
Almost every social media space in Nigeria currently hosts arguments for and against MMM. Many genuinely believe that the freezing of accounts was a step in the right direction considering the massive cashing out (or ‘GHing’ in MMM-Speak) for the festive period, which might collapse the system.
But others have said the January reopening would not happen considering what happened in other countries such as South Africa and Zimbabwe, where the scheme has collapsed.
A South African, ThendoStivo, who shared his views on Facebook, said those expecting that the freeze on Mavros (MMM credits) would be lifted in January should probably not hold their breath.
‘’You should have learned from your brothers and sisters here in South Africa. Our old Mavro money is gone as we speak and MMM is at silence as we speak (sic) so watch out for this Ponzi scheme, I have also learned my lesson here in South Africa. But at least it is not too much money that I lost (sic),” he posted on Facebook.
When MMM collapsed in South Africa, the administrators also blamed it on the panic orchestrated by untrusting media in the country. In fact, they accused the media of “persecuting” the platform.

INEC says received 60 application for new parties

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman
Abuja – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that 60 associations have applied to the commission to be registered as political parties in the country.
The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, disclosed this at a Capacity Development Workshop organised by the electoral commission for the press corps which ended on Saturday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that 10 political parties were recently registered by INEC following court orders to bring the number of political parties in Nigeria to 40.
Oyekanmi said that the applications were at various levels of processing by the commission.
“Presently we have 40 political parties in the country. I can tell you that as at Thursday Dec. 15, 60 associations have approached the commission to be registered.
“Their applications is presently being attended to and they are in different level of processing,’’ Oyekanmi said.
The chief press secretary added that another eight groups had also approached the commission inquiring on the process of applying for political party’s registration.
Commenting on Information and Communication Technology deployed for elections by INEC, Oyekanmi said that the commission was working on some value adding projects in order to improve the country’s electoral process.
He said that the projects developed by the department were expected to be launched in 2017.
One of the projects, according to him, included voter registration transfer portal; a centralised system that handle transfer of voters from one polling unit to another.
Others were voter verification portal, integrated voter register portal, and e-based Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collection directional portal that provides useful information to the public on how to collect their PVC’s.

EDO STATE TO PRESENT 2017 BUDGET ESTIMATES MONDAY

BENIN CITY – Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo State will on Monday present the 2017 budget appropriation bill to the state House of Assembly for consideration.
The proposed Monday’s budget presentation followed the agreement by Executive and Legislative Joint Committee on the Edo State 2017 budget, after all grail areas had been captured.
Hon. Damian Lawani, the Committee’s Chairman, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Budget Appropriation, briefed the press after a meeting of the Executive and Legislative Joint Committee at the  weekend in Benin.
Lawani as said “this meeting became necessary to ensure that all the good intentions of the new administration is properly captured before presentation”.
According to Hon. Lawani, “you are aware that Mr. Governor wrote a letter to us last week intending to present the budget on Friday, but going through the budget, we saw the need for us – executive and legislative arms of government to meet and finalize the details of the appropriation bill before presentation on Monday”.
While assuring the people of a cordial relationship between the two arms of government, he said the House would ensure a thorough scrutiny of the budget estimates and a guarantee that its implementation “hugely benefits Edo people.’’

Governor Wike :" 2019 election will be a tsunami".

Rivers - Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the “invasion” of the state by security agents during the December 10 legislative rerun was an indication that the 2019 general election will be a Tsunami of sort.
Wike said Nigerians should expect fighter jets to be used during the next general elections, wondering why the military, 28,000 policemen and gunboats should be used for an ordinary legislative rerun.
The governor, who addressed journalists, observed that even Divisional Police Officers in the state were transferred a day before the rerun.
He said, “If you can have an invasion by the military, police, DSS and INEC for an ordinary legislative rerun election, then if you have presidential and governorship election, it will be a Tsunami.
“There will be fighter jets; they will locate people’s houses and bomb them because that is the only thing remaining. That is why I said anybody who is thinking about 2019 is wasting his time.
“28,000 policemen, three gunboats and others; even DPOs were transferred a day to the election. Some of the security agents had charms in their vehicles for the legislative rerun. They must bomb everybody who does not agree with them,” he added.
On the audio clip alleging that he threatened officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Wike described the material (audio clip) as contrived, adding that it was sponsored by the All Progressives Congress.
He said, “When you look at certain things, you just laugh. At no time did I speak to any electoral officer, let alone issue threats to any electoral officer. There is nowhere I spoke to an electoral officer, threatening him or her as the case maybe.
“It is totally not correct. The major issue is: did the police participate in rigging election? Did the army participate in rigging the election? Did INEC compromise?
“Let them face the reality and stop chasing shadows. What is audio clip? What can’t this government do? I don’t have an orderly; I don’t have a chief security officer, I don’t have camp commandant. All were taken away before the election.”
The governor said rather than bring the SARS Commander, Mr. Akin Fakorede, to justice for the roles he played during the rerun, as captured on video, the police authorities arrested the policemen who accompanied him (Wike) to stop the commander from swapping Rivers East Senatorial District results sheet.
He said, “They have now arrested and detained the policemen, who accompanied me to the collation centre to stop him. Even Akin Fakorede, who was caught on video, has been released so that police can bungle it. What kind of country is this?
But the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Chris Finebone, said Wike was caught pants down and had nowhere to hide.
Finebone said, “It is important to state that the APC have on several occasions in the past been brought under scrutiny by Sahara Reporters to the amusement of Wike and the PDP. But today, they have found it convenient to associate the APC with Sahara Reporters.
“That is absolute falsehood coming from him. Governor Wike should think of a better response, which we doubt he has because the audio recording is clear to everyone that it is the voice of the governor threatening to kill people.”

FG’s Information App is Out! We’ll not Allow Naysayers to Discredit Us – Lai Mohammed

L-R: Chief Technology Officer of L-Cube, Diji Adu, the Chief Executive Officer of L-Cube, Mr. Olawale Wale-Falope, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire at the launch of the Federal Government of Nigeria Information App (FGN IAPP) in Abuja on Thursday.
In its bid to ensure that correct information is dished out in real time, the Federal Government has launched an information App called FGN IAPP.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, formally launched the App on Thursday December 15, 2016, in Abuja.
He said that the Federal Government will not allow the media space to be dominated by those who are daily working to discredit it (the government) and obfuscate its achievements.
“We realized early on that in order to get undiluted and factual information directly to the people, we will have to do things differently. This is because those who are opposed to this Administration’s Change Agenda, including the corrupt elements in our society who have chosen to fight the government with their ill-gotten wealth, have taken it upon themselves to distort our messages and obfuscate our activities to give the impression that the government is not doing anything,” Mohammed said.
He said in addition to using the conventional and the Social Media, the government has introduced the Town Hall Meeting that has so far been held in Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu, Uyo and Abuja and provided a platform for Cabinet Ministers to interact directly with a cross section of Nigerians in a no-holds-barred session.

Barack Obama :“I am very proud of the work I’ve done”.

WASHINGTON, USA – DECEMBER 16: U.S. President Barack Obama speaks during his annual end-of-year news conference at the White House in Washington, USA on December 16, 2016.
Outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama has given himself a pass mark, telling Americans that he has done well in office as president in the last eight years.
Obama, who made the remarks in his final press conference of the year, on Friday justified his actions on issues ranging from the economy to Syria, and from the Russia hacking scandal to the passage of Obamacare.
“I am very proud of the work I’ve done. I think I’m a better president now than when I started,” Obama said.
The president said his administration was a historic success, in spite of a rough beginning.
“When I came into office 44 million people were uninsured. Today, we have covered more than 20 million of them. For the first time in our history, more than 90 per cent of Americans are insured.”
The President recalled the economic turmoil that was raging when he took office in the teeth of the worst recession in decades in 2009.
“As I was preparing to take office, the unemployment rate was on its way to 10 per cent. Today it is at 4.6 per cent. What I can say with confidence is that what we’ve done works. That I can prove. I can show you where we were in 2008 and I can show you where we are now. And you can’t argue that we are not better off. We are,” the two-term U.S. president said.
Obama explained that he had always had the best of motives and that where he had failed, it was often owing to a lack of better choices.
He noted the helpless horror at the human carnage in Aleppo, and admitted that he agonised over Syria more than any other issue.
“I always feel responsible. There are places around the world where horrible things are happening and because of my office, because I’m President of the United States, I feel responsible. I ask myself every single day, ‘Is there something I could do that would save lives and make a difference and spare some child who doesn’t deserve to suffer?’”
Obama, however, believed only a massive deployment by an already exhausted American military could have turned the tide.
According to him, the only choice, therefore, was to use diplomacy to stem the bloodletting.
“I cannot claim that we have been successful. That’s something that, as is true with a lot of issues and problems around the world, I have to go to bed with every night. But I continue to believe that it was the right approach given what realistically we could get done,” he said.
Obama also rebuffed criticism that he had been slow to respond to allegations of Russian cyber-meddling in the presidential election.
“My primary concern was making sure that the integrity of the election process was not in any way damaged, at a time when anything that was said by me or anybody in the White House would immediately be seen through a partisan lens,” Obama explained.
The outgoing U.S. President also made reference to Russia meddling in the U.S. election.
He said when he met Vladimir Putin in China in September, he told him to “cut it out” and pledged to hit Russia in public and covert ways before he leaves office on January 20, 2017.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the Republicans who opposed him, the press who he said overly dwelt in trivialities and the coarsening of political culture.
He expressed contempt for the Republicans who are now ready to accept Trump’s admiration of Putin.
“ Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave,” he said.
He lashed out at Putin and Assad for “savage” assaults on Aleppo and was particularly disdainful of Russia itself.
“The Russians can’t change us or significantly weaken us. They are a smaller country, they are a weaker country, their economy doesn’t produce anything that anybody wants to buy except oil and gas and arms. They don’t innovate.”
Obama said that the coverage of Hillary Clinton during the campaign was troubling, noting, however, that Democrats need to show up where people are hurting.
“Democrats are characterised as coastal, liberal, latte-sipping, you know, politically correct, out-of-touch folks. We have to be in those communities.”
The President also denied tensions between him and Donald Trump, as his own aides and those of the President-elect spar over the Russian hacking of emails belonging to the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
He said China would not stand for the President-elect’s warning that the status of Taiwan could be on the table in his “increasingly acrimonious relationship” with Beijing.
Obama warned Trump that there was a difference between campaigning and being President, adding it was a reality that Trump has yet to embrace.
He said: “I think there is a sobering process when you walk into the Oval Office. What the President-elect is going to be doing is going to be very different than what I was doing and I think people will be able to compare and contrast and make judgments about what worked for the American people.”
