The Morning After Christmas By Reuben Abati

This is an article written by Reuben Abati. Please read on.
“How was your Christmas Day?” “Comme ci, comme ca” “What’s that?” “I am speaking French. You mean you don’t even understand elementary French?” “No, I don’t. Speak English. How was Christmas?” “Low-key. Like this, like that”. “For me, it was a dead-end Christmas” “God forbid. May we never have a dead-end Christmas. I reject it in Jesus name.”
“If you like, summon the Holy Ghost. We have never had a Christmas like this one. On Christmas eve in Lagos, come and see people just going about, many of them aimlessly. The kind of shopping that heralds Christmas was absent. For the first time, I could see the real colour of sadness, frustration and regret on the people’s faces.”
“It depends on what part of Lagos you are talking about. If you had been in Lekki or Victoria Island, you would have seen a different colour.”
“I know. There are two countries in one: the real Nigeria and the other Nigeria, where people live in a bubble. But the bubble is beginning to burst everywhere. With the Naira now N500 to the dollar, and businesses failing everyday, the pain is spreading. It was an unusual Christmas.”
“Everywhere jus’ dry. I know some people who used to hold Christmas parties every December 25. They just decided to postpone it till next year. But did you at least manage to eat rice and chicken?”
“Anybody that eats rice these days is very lucky indeed, with a bag of rice now N20, 000. And you can’t even be sure it is real rice. I learnt the market was flooded with plastic rice.”
“Plastic rice? What does that taste like?”
“I guess like plastic. “
“Never heard of that. Plastic rice?”
“To be on the safe side, these days, I only eat Ofada rice. Local rice.”
“All kinds of things happen during recession. Plastic rice. Empty pockets.”
“I know something about empty pockets, my brother. Imagine what I went through trying to get money from the ATM, two days to Christmas. I went to about five banks, you’d think people were queuing for fuel, with everyone looking anxious.”
“I know.”
“One queue covered an entire street. When I eventually found an ATM and it was my turn, the machine just started blinking. I didn’t know when I started shouting Blood of Jesus, Blood of Jesus.”
“You should have planned ahead. I don’t know why people have to wait till the last minute before withdrawing money. Nigerians should learn to plan ahead.”
“I did. The ATMs misbehave a lot these days and they are always crowded.”
“There is no money in circulation. I hear the Central Bank is broke. The banks are just managing.”
“You have started, hen? How can the Central Bank of Nigeria be broke? For the past three weeks now, the spot price of crude oil has been over $50 per barrel. That’s some good revenue.”
“May be it is the banks that are broke then. I just hope nobody has taken depositors’ funds to go and invest in the MMM.”
“What nonsense!”
“MMM was giving people better returns on their investments. Even bankers invested in the scheme. And now that the scheme has been frozen till January ending, there is panic everywhere. You would be surprised the kind of revelations that would come up if the profile of investors in the scheme is investigated.”
“Nigerians are always looking for quick profit, but I don’t believe that a bank will invest in MMM”
“Dey there. Look at the way special prayers, night vigils and deliverance sessions are being held over this MMM thing. Some churches are holding get-your-MMM-money-back prayer sessions, and when you attend those sessions, come and see crowd! If that Ponzi scheme should crash eh, a lot of people will commit suicide.”
“One man sold his only car and invested the money in MMM.”
“I know. Some people sold their houses too.”
“The MMM scheme is a comment on the Nigerian banking system. Obviously, Nigerians don’t trust the banks and their miserable deposit interest rates.”
“Tell me, did you invest in the MMM?”
“No. But I almost did. I know some people who made huge profits from it. I was still contemplating putting some money down to test the waters when the alarm blew.”
“You are lucky, then.”
“I guess every investment is a risk.”
“I tried to make fun of some of my friends who invested in the MMM the other day. January 2017 has suddenly become the most important month in their lives. The way they reacted, hen. I was accused of being insensitive and sadistic. I quickly shut up”.
“So, what are your plans for the new year?”
“I have no plans yet. But I have been following what the prophets are predicting.”
“You believe those predictions? I just read them for fun. But this December, I have only read the predictions by Prophet Ayo Fayose”
“Prophet Ayo Fayose. Never heard of him. Which Christian Ministry does he lead?”
“The Ayo Fayose Evangelical Church of Yahweh, Iyana Jogunomi, Ori oke Ekiti-Kete.”
“You are joking!”
“Yes, I am. But you mean you don’t know that the Governor of Ekiti State is a prophet?. Every year, he also makes predictions about the coming year. He has released his 2017 predictions”
“Seriously, is he also among the Prophets?”
“Uhn hun. In his latest predictions, he talks about how the Holy Spirit directed him.”
“I hear, though, that he has been anointed by Daddy G.O. Pastor Adeboye.”
“Anointment comes from God. What happened is that Pastor Adeboye commended Fayose publicly for leading his people courageously and defending their interests.”
“The APC won’t like that”
“Daddy G.O is not a politician.”
“But have you not heard that the Ekiti Chapter of the APC issued a statement to say that Fayose bribed Pastor Adeboye?”
“May the Holy Ghost slap the mouth of anybody who utters that blasphemy. The Bible says touch not my anointed. The Bible also says He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world. The word of God is greater than politics. “
“The way you are carrying on, the APC in Ekiti will issue another statement to say you have also been bribed by Fayose. Anyway don’t worry, they have denied the statement. But the PDP in Ekiti has also issued a statement saying the denial is an after-thought. Too much politics in that their Ekiti.”
“Forget about them. But what did the Governor predict, if I may ask? You mean, he has so much free time on his hands; he is busy making predictions. In any case, many of these predictions are somehow. Anybody can predict Nigeria’s future at anytime. It is always something like: I foresee a crisis in the Niger Delta. I foresee a change of cabinet. I foresee deaths in Nollywood. I foresee changes at the Central Bank. I foresee the emergence of a new political party…I foresee Donald Trump creating tension in the world. Three prominent traditional rulers should pray against sickness and bereavement…. Common sense.”
“Oh, oh.”
“But how come no prophet predicted that Nigerian soldiers will capture Sambisa forest and drive out the Boko Haram or that a day after, there will be suicide bombing at a cattle market in Maiduguri? “
“Suicide bombing at a cattle market? What is the target?”
“No prophet foresaw the killings in Southern Kaduna and the waste of human lives or that a white man will be arrested inside Sambisa forest. You don’t have to be a prophet to know tomorrow ”
“Whatever.”
“We should thank God for everything and for the joy of surviving Christmas in a season of recession. We should also thank God we are not in Saudi Arabia, but in our country, Nigeria.”
“What has Saudi Arabia got to do with Christmas? I don’t get it.”
“It is a crime to celebrate Christmas in Saudi Arabia. This year, seven Africans – 4 Nigerians, 2 Ghanaians, and one Kenyan were arrested in Saudi Arabia for playing Christmas Carols, they could be sent to jail for 10 years.”
“What? For playing Christmas songs?”
“I understand there is even an Islamic cleric in India, Zakir Abdul Karim Naik who told Muslim brothers and sisters not to wish Christians Merry Christmas, because it is a “big sin, worst evil, worse than fornication or murder.” What is the world turning into: A world of hate, bigotry and intolerance. Tell me it is not true. ”
“It is true.”
“Sad.”
“Sorry about the fire accident at Nigerian Breweries in Lagos. I know you drink beer.”
“If you want to talk about something else, do so”
“I am just concerned that there are too many fire accidents taking place these days. When petrol tankers are not exploding on the highways, markets are being gutted by fire, companies and houses are going up in flames. The Lagos State Fire Service reported for example that 45 markets in Lagos had fire accidents between January and September 2016 alone.”
“The Fire Service should not moan. They need to do a lot more to educate the people about safety precautions and ensure that buildings respect the Fire Code. They also need to be better organized to deal with emergencies.”
“The Fire Service in Nigeria is poorly funded.”
“Harmattan. Dry season. The possibility of more fire accidents is high. The public should be sensitized all the same.”
“Most of the fire accidents are due to electrical faults, either faulty connections or power surge. We need a national safety programme to prevent fire outbreaks. Every market and major company should have a fire station. There should be fire hydrants across every major city.”
“I’d just say that prevention is better than cure.”
“Who is your Man of the Year, 2016?”
“Man of the Year. Who is yours?”
“Yours first”
“Let me see. I’ll choose the Nigerian Soldier. The Nigerian soldier is practically holding Nigeria together. He is underpaid, over-used, overstretched, denied access to equipment, and money and often subjected to the harshest possible conditions. Our soldiers are involved in one operation or the other across the country, protecting the country and even doing police work. Operation Crocodile Tears, Operation Harmony, Operation Lafiya Dole, Operation Delta Safe, Operation Gama Aiki, Operation MESA, Operation Awatse, Operation Sharan Daji, Operation Maximum Security. From one region to the other, the Nigerian soldier is busy keeping Nigeria safe from kidnappers, terrorists, secessionists, oil bunkerers, cattle rustlers and extremists.”
“Our soldiers have even been sent abroad to learn cattle rearing because their next assignment includes the management of cattle ranches. I agree with you. I salute their courage.”
“And who is your own man of the year?”
“I’ll choose the average Nigerian for the resilience, the capacity and the courage to suffer and smile at the same time”.

FG Announces New Reforms in Nigeria's Public Service

The Muhammadu Buhari government has announced plans to effect new reforms in the country's public service starting from January 2017.
According to Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dr Joe Abah, these reforms will foster growth of Nigeria's economy.
“We have a 10-year plan for reforms we’ve been following, however, as with every plan the sequence and prioritisation ranges with government emphasis.
“And so for 2017 we will be focusing very heavily on making it easier to do business in Nigeria.
“And that is why the bureau has commissioned a number of studies to look at the bottlenecks to service delivery and we are looking at those things that affect the ordinary Nigerian directly.
“For instance, the processes for getting a passport, the processes for getting a driver’s licence, the process for getting a tax clearance and the process for seeing a doctor in a government hospital.
“And the gap between when you retire and when you actually start to get your pension. We have instances where people have retired and for one year they haven’t got any pension.
“So, these are some of the topical issues we will be looking at to see where the bottlenecks are and what we can do to ease the process.
Besides, he said that the bureau was working towards ensuring that there was coordinated approach to dealing with the problems of unemployment in Nigeria rather what it used to be.

Nigeria: FG Bans Sale of Imported Fruit Juices Nationwide

The National Agency of Food and Drug Administration, NAFDAC, has ordered a halt to the sale of imported fruit juice in Nigeria.
Speaking during a mop-up exercise at Gbagada Lagos state, NAFDAC Team Leader (who is also from the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate), Mr. Carolly Ngobiri, said the exercise was in line with a circular of Dec. 19 from the Directorate, directing that an urgent visit to all markets and supermarkets in all states, be embarked upon, to mop-up these items.
“We are here to carry out one of NAFDAC’s mandate; to make sure that that all foreign juices are removed from the market. We have given them a deadline from now to Dec. 31 to stop their sales and remove them from the shelves.
“But in order to ensure that these are totally removed, we have started mopping up all the juices all over the country. “By Dec. 31, we do not want to see any imported juice in Nigeria

“NO WAY!”: Trump Replies Obama’s Statement that He Could have Defeated Him

The war of words between outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama and incoming President Donald Trump continued with Trump rejecting Obama’s claim that he could have defeated him in the November 8 presidential election if he had run against him.
Trump, in a reply to the outgoing President’s claim, took to his twitter handle and wrote in capital letters: NO WAY!”.
The president-elect also listed some policies under Obama’s administration, which he thought constituted baggage to the outgoing President, and would have made it difficult for Obama to be re-elected had the U.S. Constitution allowed him to contest for the third term.
“President Obama said that he thinks he would have won against me. He should say that but I say NO WAY! – jobs leaving, ISIS, OCare, etc,” Trump fired back at the outgoing president from whom he would take over on January 20, 2017.
“The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad! The world was gloomy before I won – there was no hope. Now the market is up nearly 10% and Christmas spending is over a trillion dollars!” Trump added.
Obama had told his former senior adviser David Axelrod in an interview for the “The Axe Files” podcast, produced by the
University of Chicago Institute of Politics and CNN , and aired on Monday, that Americans still subscribed to his vision of progressive change, asserting that he could have succeeded in this year’s election if he was eligible to run.
“I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilised a majority of the American people to rally behind it. I know that in conversations that I’ve had with people around the country, even some people who disagreed with me, they would say the vision, the direction that you point towards is the right one,” Obama said.
NAN reports that Obama, a former Illinois senator, still receives high popularity ratings among Americans, currently exceeding 50 per cent, one of the highest for a two-term U.S. president.
Obama had in his last Christmas address from the White House, listed some of his administration’s achievements in the last eight years.
“Together, we fought our way back from the worst recession in 80 years, and got unemployment to a nine-year low. We secured health insurance for another 20 million Americans, and new protections for folks who already had insurance.
We made America more respected around the world, took on the mantle of leadership in the fight to protect this planet for our kids, and much, much more.
By so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than it was when we first got here. And I’m hopeful we’ll build on the progress we’ve made in the years to come,” Obama said.
The two-term president said that there was a difference between Trump’s change mantra of 2016 and the hope-and-change vision he heralded in 2008, which won him outstanding victory over Republican John McCain.
“In the wake of the election and Trump winning, a lot of people have suggested that somehow, it really was a fantasy. What I would argue is, is that the culture actually did shift, that the majority does buy into the notion of a one America that is tolerant and diverse and open and full of energy and dynamism.”
In the 50-minute session, Obama repeated his suggestion that Democrats had ignored entire segments of the voting population, leading to Trump’s win.
He implied that Clinton’s campaign had not made a vocal enough argument directed toward Americans who had not felt the benefits of the economic recovery.
“If you think you’re winning, then you have a tendency, just like in sports, maybe to play it safer.”
He, however, said he believed Clinton “performed wonderfully under really tough circumstances” and was mistreated by the media.
The podcast interview was Obama’s latest post-election analysis, which had focused on Democrats’ failure to convince non-urban voters and a media preoccupied with negative stories about Clinton.
Obama said his party this year had not made an emotional connection to voters in hard-hit communities, relying instead on policy points he said did not make enough of an impact.
“We’re not there on the ground communicating not only the dry policy aspects of this, but that we care about these communities, that we’re bleeding for these communities. It means caring about local races, state boards or school boards and city councils and states legislative races. And not thinking that somehow, just a great set of progressive policies that we present to the New York Times editorial board will win the day,” he said.
Obama cited an unlikely model for future Democratic success: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who he said had executed an effective – if obstructionist – strategy.
“ Mitch McConnell ’s insight, just from a pure tactical perspective, was pretty smart and well executed, the degree of discipline that he was able to impose on his caucus was impressive. His insight was that we just have to say no to that,” Obama said.
He said part of his post-presidential strategy would be developing young Democratic leaders, including organisers, journalists and politicians, who could galvanise voters behind a progressive agenda.
The outgoing president also said that he would not hesitate to weigh in on important political debates after he leaves office.

For Failing to Provide for Christmas Celebration, Woman Allegedly Stabs her Husband to Death in Lagos

A Christmas Day tragedy occurred on London Barber Street, Majidun, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State after a woman,Christiana Odo , allegedly killed her husband, Rominus , because he said he didn’t have money for food for the celebration.
When Christiana asked for the money, Rominus turned her down. This led to a fight, and she picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed her husband to death.
The case was reported at the Owode Onirin Divisional Police headquarters by the landlord.
“The woman asked the man for money for food, but the man turned her down, saying he didn’t have money. This led to an argument and the man hit her. They fought and the woman, in anger, went into the kitchen and got a knife with which she stabbed him to death. What attracted neighbours was the man’s scream for help as he was drenched in blood. The woman said it was not intentional,” a police source told PUNCH .
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the incident said that the suspect has been arrested and the corpse has been deposited in the Ikorodu General Hospital’s morgue.
She added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) , Yaba for further investigation.

Senate Wants 2.5% of Budget for Constituency Projects

With a new legislation, the Senate is planning to get a more permanent source of funding for the constituency projects which has always caused contention between the National Assembly and the Presidency.
The Senate has started a move to create a Constituency Development Fund to be held in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and financed from deductions from annual national revenues.
According to The Guardian, a bill for the new legislation, tagged ‘Constituency Development Fund Bill 2016’ has been introduced to the Upper Chamber by Senate Leader, Mohammed Ali Ndume.
If this bill is passed into law, 2.5 per cent of the annual budget and other monetary accruals will go to the constituency projects and if by next year the legislation is functional, N182.5 billion of the N7.3 trillion budget will be going to the projects. If this amount is for only members of the Upper Chamber, each senator will be going home with N1.7 billion for constituency projects.
However this move by the legislators may cause further rift between them and the executive which has the constitutional responsibility to allocate projects in budgets and executing them. The National Assembly’s duty is to pass annual budgets.
The leadership of the National Assembly packaged the bill as a better and more acceptable way to replace a former legislative plan to force the Federal Government to lose at least 20 per cent of its national budgets to the constituency projects.
In less than a week before receiving the N7.3 trillion 2017 budget proposal from President Muhammadu Buhari on December 14, 2016, the senate endorsed for further legislative work, a bill to reserve 20 per cent of annual budgets for National Assembly Constituency Projects.
The bill, sponsored by Stella Oduah (PDP, Anambra North), after passing the second reading, was referred to the Senate committees on Appropriation and Finance, is expected to be passed into law early in 2017.
The opposition of the bill across the country made some senators suggest alternative means of sourcing for funds for the projects.
Ndume’s bill proposes the deduction of 2.5 per cent of all the Federal Government’s ordinary budget in every financial year to the Constituency Development Fund.
The bill will ensure that the Department of Rural Development of the Ministry of Agriculture is able to perform other key functions particularly in regards to the constituency projects, which will ensure timely and efficient management of the fund; receiving and discussing list of proposed projects from the constituencies; ensuring the execution of approved projects to completion; and ensuring the compilation of proper records, returns and reports for the constituencies.
The department will also receive and address complaints and disputes or where necessary refer such complaints to the appropriate government body or the National Assembly for investigation and resolution.
The Senate President Bukola Saraki , justified this move saying: “I don’t think there is anything that ensures equity in the country like the constituency projects to our constituencies, full stop.”

Chapecoense Airplane Crash: “No technical-factor was part of the accident, everything involved human-error,” Authorities Say

A general view of the airplane crash in the Colombian area of Antioquia where a British-Aerospace BAE- Avro with players of the Brazilian team ‘Chapecoense’ crashed, on November 29, 2016 in La Union, Colombia. Players of the Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense were flying to Medellin to play next November 30 the final first leg match against Atletico Nacional, as part of the Copa Sudamericana.
Errors by the pilot, airline, and Bolivian regulators are to blame for a plane crash in Colombia that killed 71 people last month, including most of Brazil’s Chapecoense soccer team, Colombia aviation authorities said.
The plane, operated by Bolivia-based charter company LaMia, crashed on a wooded hillside near Medellin because the pilot failed to refuel en route and did not report engine failures caused by the lack of fuel until it was too late, officials said.
“No technical-factor was part of the accident, everything involved human-error, added to a management-factor in the company’s administration and the management and organization of the flight-plans by the authorities in Bolivia,” Colombia’s Secretary for Air-Safety-Colonel Freddy Bonilla told journalists.
Aviation authorities in Bolivia and the airline “accepted conditions for the flight presented in the flight plan that were unacceptable,” Bonilla added.
Besides a lack of fuel, the plane was over its weight limit by nearly 400 kilograms (881 lbs) and was not certified to fly at the altitude at which the journey took place, Bonilla said.
The preliminary conclusions of Colombia’s investigation coincide with assertions by Bolivia authorities last week that LaMia and the plane’s pilot were directly responsible for the accident.
Pilot Miguel Quiroga was also a co-owner of the airline and was killed in the crash.
Gustavo Vargas Gamboa , LaMia’s chief executive, was jailed pending trial earlier this month on manslaughter and other charges, which he has denied.
His son, Gustavo Vargas Villegas , a former official with Bolivia’s aviation authority, is also being held on charges that he misused his influence in authorizing the license of the plane that crashed. He also says he is innocent.
Criminal charges have also been brought against LaMia co-owner Marco Antonio Rocha Benegas, whose whereabouts are unknown, and air traffic controller Celia Castedo, who fled Bolivia after the crash and is seeking asylum in Brazil.
Bolivian authorities have said the crash was an isolated incident, but that the government will accelerate the process of implementing a new safety system.
Colombian investigators have the final word on causes of the crash, Bolivian authorities have said.

Sambisa forest would serve as training ground for personnel of the Nigerian Army as from 2017.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday said Sambisa forest would serve as training ground for personnel of the Nigerian Army as from 2017.
Buratai said this in Damasak, Borno, while celebrating Christmas with troops of 145 Battalion after the road leading to the town was reopened by Gov. Kashim Shettima, three years after closure.
He said troops were already conducting a mop up operation in the forest after the last strong hold of the Boko Haram terrorists was captured.
“We are also opening up roads to Sambisa and Alagarno forest. Sambisa forest is going to be one of our training grounds.
“I have already directed that we should conduct Nigerian Army small arms championship in that forest Next year.
“And we are going to use it also to test fire our fighting vehicles, other key equipment and weapons that requires testing whenever we want to induct new weapon and equipment into the Nigerian army inventory.
“It will afford us very good ground for basic tactics and indeed advance tactics, including but not limited to tactics at the Platoon, company, battalion, Brigade and even division levels.
“We are going to make it more robust to make sure that these criminals do not come back to that forest again.

President Buhari Lied Against Jonathan on Christmas Day!

By Reno Omokri

On Christmas Day of 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari hosted leading citizens of the Federal Capital Territory led by the minister of the FCT, Muhammad Bello, and during the visit he returned to his old habit of blaming and said, and I quote, "there was no money saved, no infrastructure built, and power is still our main problem."
This is patently untrue and without mincing words, President Buhari lied.
Former President Jonathan left $2.07 billion in the Excess Crude Account when he handed over to President Buhari on May 29, 2015. He also left Foreign reserves of $29. 6 billion for the incoming government in May 2015.
If ex President Jonathan left no savings, with what money did President Muhammadu Buhari use to bail out those states that could not pay salary (mostly APC states) after he assumed office in May 2015? Of course the Central Bank of Nigeria did not print money! That money came from somewhere.
On Tuesday the 26th of July, 2016, President Buhari commissioned the $1.457bn Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge rail project. This was a project built and COMPLETED by the Jonathan administration. It is a 187 kilometer railway that enables Nigerians to live in Kaduna and work in Abuja. Is this not infrastructure?
The only federal university in President Buhari's state is the federal university Dutsin-Ma was built by former President Jonathan who also built 11 other federal universities in Zamfara, Yobe, Nasarawa, Kogi, Taraba, Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Ebonyi, Bayelsa and Ekiti states.
By building 12 new federal universities and 165 almajiri schools and renovating 507 additional secondary schools all over Nigeria through the Universal Basic Education Commission, the Jonathan administration not only increased access to education, the policy also had the intended side effect of putting hundreds of thousands of youths to work which stimulated the economy and contributed to GDP growth. Are these not infrastructure?
To prove that former President Jonathan prudently and judiciously developed all parts of Nigeria, I will now list, state by state, the infrastructure that the Jonathan administration invested in every state of Nigeria. I challenge President Muhammadu Buhari to contradict me.
In Abia, Jonathan completed power plants in Aba and Alaoji and reconstructed and reopened Ohafia barracks to stem kidnapping.
In Adamawa Jonathan constructed 5 Almajiri schools and the NAF Comprehensive Sec School and a Terminal at the Yola airport.
In Anambra Jonathan completed Onitsha River Port, repaired Onitsa-Owerri Rd and kick started the process of the 2nd Niger Bridge.
In Akwa Ibom Jonathan established a new Federal Polytechnic in Ukana and the Nkari Earth dam and rehabilitated FG rds.
In Bauchi Jonathan equipped the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital Bauchi and built 5 Almajiri schools.
In Benue Jonathan is building the Loko-Oweto bridge, completed the Makurdi Water Supply Scheme supplying to 1 million people.
In Borno, Jonathan has fought desertification with the Great Green Wall Project and rehabilitated the Uba – Mbalala Road. He also set up the Presidential Initiative for the Northeast and the Victims Support Fund which raised ₦59 billion for the Northeast. Interestingly, it is from this PINE that a certain Babachir Lawal is accused of pilfering ₦270 million from.
In Cross River Jonathan rehabilitated the Margaret Ekpo Int’l Airport and Modernised the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
In Delta Jonathan has taken Itakpe-Ajaokuta-warri railway to 80% completion and kick started the $16B Gas City Project at Ogidigben
In Ebonyi Jonathan established the Fed University in Ndufe – Alike, repaired over 250km of roads and built power substations.
In Edo Jonathan completed the Ihovbor power Station, reconstructed the Benin-Ore-Sagamu and equipped UBTH.
In Ekiti Jonathan established the Federal University in Oye – Ekiti, and repaired hundreds of kilometers of Federal Rds.
In Enugu Jonathan gave the S. East their first International Airport and revived the PH-Enugu rail line.

Buhari Should Reduce Price of Cement To N300, Guru Maharaji Lists 6 Other Things

Satguru Maharaji ji, the founder of Love Family sect, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a Price Control Board in order to ameliorate the impact of the current economic recession on ordinary Nigerians.
He also told newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday that a price control mechanism would strengthen the Naira.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sect leader spoke at a news conference which was part of activities to mark his 69th birthday.
He said the government should also do the following:
1. Our government should reduce the price of cement to N300 to enable the country build homes for its people and if need be, government should empower Nigerians to import cement to bring prices down.
2. The Nigeria Airways should be revived with the old buildings and structures rehabilitated in order for the country to compete with small nations which have notable airlines like Ethiopia, Cameroun and Kenya,” the sect leader said.
3. He also called for a reduction in airfares for local travels within the country to a flat rate of N15,000.
4. Maharaji ji argued that state governments should be allowed to acquire planes in partnership with stakeholders as well as oil blocks.
He accused Nigerian banks of operating as traders instead of being “ beacons of enterprise, reconstruction, innovation and productive activities.’’
5. The sect leader called on government to compel all oil companies to release two percent of their gross profits for research in universities
6. The local refineries built by militants should not be destroyed but improved upon since they are inventions made out of necessity.
He, however, expressed gratitude to the president on the steps taken so far at “ retrieving ’’ the Ajaokuta Steel Company, saying the organisation was capable of promoting meaningful industrial progress.

FG Moves to End Drug Hawking by August 1, 2017

Pharm. Elijah Mohammed , Registrar Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) , has restated the Federal Government’s commitment to ending open drug hawking by August 1, 2017.
Mohammed gave the assurance in an interview with NAN on Monday in Abuja described this as part of efforts to regulate drug distribution system in the country.
He said the move would assist in curtailing the menace of open drug sale.
Mohammed attributed major challenges in the health system to open drug hawking.
He added that a lot of the hawkers sold fake and adulterated drugs.
The registrar stated that coordinated wholesale centres are currently being built in four states of the federation where open sale of drugs is predominant.
He said that the drug dealers would be relocated to the centres to enable them to carry out their activities in a coordinated manner.
According to him, the centres would go a long way to curtailing drug hawking, among others, as there would be strict regulation of drug distribution and sales at the centres.
NAN reports that open drugs marketers or dealers are unlicensed medicines sellers in and around the streets, major markets like Idumota in Lagos, Onitsha, over-head bridges, Sabongari in Kano and Nyanya-FCT, motor parks, among others.
Noting the locations of the centres as Kano, Lagos, Onitsha, Aba Mohammed however said that construction of those facilities are currently on-going.
He however said that all dealers would be relocated to those centres to carry out their activities and would be properly regulated.
The registrar however said that anyone cut operating outside those centres after the specified date would be arrested and prosecuted by security agency.
“The issue of open drug market will come to an end by Aug 1st next year and we are working toward that and have put in place necessary measures to take care of that which is the coordinated wholesale centres.
The coordinated wholesale centre in Onitsha which is situated in Oba will take care of the Onitsha overhead bridge. And we have inspected the location and been granted approval and development has started.
We have just four centres to address the major open drug market and we have only one centres in each of the states where those operations are predominant because it was only one open drug market that have been identified,’’ Mohammed.

TB Joshua’s Death is Near, Black Powers Will Attack Buhari- Prophet Faleyimu Reveals 2017 Prophecies

The founder of Mountain of Blessing and Miracle Church of Christ, Dr. Olagorioye Faleyimu, has revealed shocking prophecies for 2017, saying that the death of Nigeria’s renowned prophet, TB Joshua was near.`
He made this known on Christmas Day in his church in Lagos.
On Nollywood, he said, “I have been giving prophecies concerning the industry and Nigeria as a whole which none has ever failed.
Read below…

1. “There is a big tree in the industry disturbing them and this tree has to be cut off before they could be set free. Just look back, some years ago, you hardly heard about showbiz stars dying but there is something amidst them now which is seriously disturbing and it must be removed.
“It is a battle though. They need to pray like never before so as not to lose another 2 stars before the year runs out.

2. “A popular actress in Nollywood, Funke Akindele who was once in the Yoruba movie industry should pray deeply so as to have children. Without special prayers, she won’t have a child before she dies because she is destined to be wealthy and famous but not destined to have a child and stable husband until she engages herself in the special prayer.

3. “Whosoever marries her must have another reason because the issue of not having a child will keep coming up and it will scatter the marriage.

4. “If she refuses to do the prayer, she will end up adopting a child and by that time, she will be living alone without husband. Another grace she has is to marry a pastor who can fight the battle on her behalf with prayers.

5. “Nigerian traditional rulers also need serious prayers because many of them will be kidnapped and they will die in kidnappers’ dens.

6. “Many things will happen before the year comes to an end especially from terrorists.

7. Heavy rain will fall this year and it will destroy so many things. It will demolish houses while many people will lose their lives in the process. So, everyone should be prayerful.

8. “God told me to tell Governor Fayose of Ekiti State to be careful and he shouldn’t turn himself to God.
“God said he should watch his mouth so as not to end his political career in jail. PDP will never rule Nigeria again no matter how much they try. Their governors will win some states but they can’t win presidency again. APC has 8 years to rule and they have spent just 1 year. APC won’t rule Nigeria again after 2023.

9. “Yoruba and the North will soon form a new party that will take over from APC. The senate president will finish his tenure before the world black powers will push him away because they are the ones ruling Nigeria presently.

10. “The world black powers have declared Nigeria as their target and their spirit is what is ruling the country. Most of the pastors in Nigeria belong to this secret society because that is where they get powers to perform miracles.

11. “God said we are not worshiping him in Nigeria but worshiping money. People will realize their mistakes when the chosen one shows up to rescue Nigeria.

12. “Buhari isn’t the Messiah. He is sent to punish those ruining Nigeria and he will do that for 8 years. The Messiah is a man of God and he is not in politics yet. He said peace will reign in Nigeria in 2025.

13. “God said nobody should criticize Buhari’s government because his mission is to set the pace for the Messiah. God said APC and Buhari should be careful because they are not the ones to rescue us.
“I have said it before that Buhari can’t face the world black powers, These powers held their meeting in South Africa to decide on how Buhari’s government will be. I said it earlier this year that only the rich ones will be favored in Buhari’s government because cash won’t flow.

14. “Some of the Nigerian dignitaries won’t witness 2019 elections because the world black powers have listed 150 of them to be eliminated before 2019 and that is why they should all be prayerful.

15. “T.B Joshua should be prayerful so as not to lose a child before he goes because his time is near.

16. “There will be more increment in some food items before the year runs out. Boko Haram will not stop this year, they suck the numbers of the blood and the powerful ones have agreed with the world black powers because they are the ones using Boko Haram.

17. “Three former and present governors should pray against sudden death before the year ends.

18. “The Ooni of Ife should also pray so as not to lose his father in early 2017. Buhari will not succeed in the agriculture initiation he engaged in because he is not the one to use that idea; the idea is for the Messiah. Nigerians should not expect change from anyone in government.
“Without changing the flag of Nigeria, the Messiah will change it. God said the present flag we are using is a symbol of suffering.

19. “Any government that organizes prayer for Nigeria will keep seeing disappointment because there is nothing disturbing Nigeria from progressing because God has given us the resources to use.

20. “One of the 7 points the Messiah will use is to stop prayers and engage in praises. Newspaper publishers should also pray so that they won’t lose 2 of them this year.

21. “Journalists generally should pray against hardship this year because it will be difficult for them but next year, things may change for better,” he revealed.

Recall that in January, 2016, Dr Faleyimu, revealed that showbiz stars both in the music and movie industry should pray for 5 elders and 5 young ones so that they won’t die this year.

It started manifesting as star actor Arakangudu was reported dead on February 18, 2016, including ace actor, Elder Maya, who died in October after battling a liver-related ailment, movie icon, Bukky Ajayi, among others.

MTN Pays N80 Billion of N330 Billion Fine to Federal Government

Telecoms giant MTN has paid the Federal Government N80 billion of the N330 billion fine imposed on the network for failing to deactivate over five million unregistered SIM card.
The network was initially fined $5.2 billion (N1.04 trillion) for failing to deactivate more than five million unregistered SIM cards but was later reduced to N330 billion.
The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu , said that the network company paid the sum for the first year. He said:
For the first year, they paid N80 billion, after paying the initial N50 billion, and they will have to pay for three years until they complete the N330 billion.
MTN does not have a choice, when the law was made, it said for every unregistered SIM card in use, the fine is N200,000, the law never anticipated that one company will be in violation to the tune of millions of lines.
It was inconceivable, so when the thing was added 200,000 times 5.2million lines, it came to a trillion plus.
When it happened, the MTN did four things; one they accepted that they were in default, two, they apologised for that and three they committed themselves never to allow such a thing to happen and number four, they asked for remission.
Government had to look at a number of factors because if they have to pay this amount; they will pack up.
He further explained the implications of having the network company pack up. This will “shake the confidence of international investors in Nigerian economy, we must avoid it” and render about 5,000 workers jobless.

5-Year Jail Time For Anyone Who Celebrates Christmas In Brunei

Earlier the rest of the world condemned monarch-ruled Brunei after announcing the introduction of the Sharia penal code that would include penalties such as the severing of limbs and death by stoning.
The tiny but prosperous state on the island of Borneo that is ruled by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, has now made international headlines once again after the state announced a ban on Christmas.
The ban was declared on the internationally celebrated Christian holiday because the religious affairs ministry said that publicly marking non-Islamic rituals or festivities could be seen as propagations of religions other than Islam.
Roughly 20 per cent of Brunei’s residents comprise of non-Muslims, including sizeable Buddhist and Christian communities.
‘Believers of other religions that live under the rule of an Islamic country – according to Islam – may practice their religion or celebrate their religious festivities among their community, with the condition that the celebrations are not disclosed or displayed publicly to Muslims, ‘
‘Muslims should be careful not to follow celebrations such as these that are not in any way related to Islam… and could unknowingly damage the faith of Muslims. ‘ Said the government of Brunei in a statement
The tough restriction was put in place after children and adults were seen wearing clothes ‘that resemble Santa Claus’ – thereby promoting a religion other than Islam
The statement also noted that businesses that publicly displayed Christmas decorations would be asked to take them down– to which the businesses had given their ‘full cooperation’ in the matter.
The penalty for celebrating Christmas in Brunei is punishable with a jail term of up to 5-years .
Brunei’s latest decision to ban Christmas officially will no doubt, attract more international criticism- following the harsh Sharia penal code that was announced to be implemented in the state in April by Brunei’s 68-year-old Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Cosmetics That Kills – Malaysians Are Dying From Toxic Beauty Products

The cosmetics industry is a billion ringgit industry in Malaysia, and small-medium scale cosmetics industry are unknowingly putting themselves at huge risk with beauty products that can kill.
Many of these products have unknown origins, many are bought in from China, Thailand or the Philippines, plus some that are manufactured locally. Most are packed with suspicious chemicals and harmful substances to meet the growing demand for cosmetics and skincare products, which promise to turn legions of fans into flawless beauties — or at least make them a couple of shades lighter.
Unfortunately, by making use of loopholes in this poorly regulated industry, manufacturers and retailers have managed to bring these products on sale without much of a care to what it may do to their customer’s health.
They are just required to declare their product ingredients through a “notification process” before being allowed into the market. No lab tests or registration are required.
NST had set up a special team to investigate this claims and find out how dangerous these cosmetics products are, and to their shock, it was worse than they initially expected.
The team bought some samples from kiosks operating in renowned shopping malls, pasar malam, bazaars and businesses running on social media platforms, the products ranged from counterfeit and home-grown brands sourced from sellers, which are then sent to science laboratories run by reputable universities, as well as private facilities, to help identify hazardous compounds contained within.
The products sent in, many currently in trend among users, were found to contain harmful substances, including hydroquinone and mercury — a neurotoxin that these manufacturers use as a skin-whitening agent.
Most of the products, including facemask, whitening night cream, whitening moisturiser and sunblock, lipstick, mascara, eye shadow, compact powder and foundation, only listed safe and permissible ingredients on their labels.

To the unlucky ones, use of these products may cause severe complications, including severe swelling, redness and thinning of the skin from using these products, have gone on social media to register their frustration. Some also suffer from Ochronosis — a condition which leaves a permanent blue hue on their faces.
Users are also at risk of dermatitis, severe kidney damage, and in many cases, anxiety, depression, psychosis and peripheral neuropathy.

Public complaints about the products, however, are often quickly erased by the website administrators, and soon none would be the wiser.

Youth Corp member , young boy who just got University admission die in Gombe car crash (photos)

A female serving corp member named Hanatu Jonas has lost her life after a vehicle taking her from Bauchi to Gombe state last Wednesday had a burst tyre and ended in a fatal car crash.
Hanatu had survived the crash but reportedly died because the first hospital she was rushed to, Alkaleri General Hospital, had no oxygen mask. By the time she was moved to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching hospital in Bauchi from Alkaleri General hospital for lack of oxygen mask, she died.
The identity card seen on her while her corpse was being transferred to the mortuary revealed that she was a graduate of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. Her family members have been urged to
come and claim her corpse.
Meanwhile, another victim of the ghastly road traffic crash alongside Hanatu was this young man who was returning to his home town Kumo in Gombe state after a successful JAMB screening by Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi for admission.
May their souls rest in perfect peace.

Germany Discovers World War II Bomb, Defuses on Christmas Day [PHOTOS] Discussion in 'World News' sta

An unwelcome Christmas surprise in southern Germany forced the evacuation of 54,000 people from their homes Sunday after the discovery of a bomb dating from World War II, local authorities said.
It was a British bomb that was found in the city of Augsburg and led to the biggest mobilisation in Germany — around 900 police officers — since the war itself.
The 1.8-tonne explosive had been found on Tuesday during work at a construction site in the centre of the Bavarian city, but authorities planned to defuse the bomb around mid-day Sunday.
“Today I ask everyone concerned to leave the area, if possible by themselves,” said Augsburg mayor Kurt Gribi in a video message posted on the city’s Twitter account.
Gribi also called for “each person to verify that their relatives, parents and friends have found places to stay outside the (security) zone… Look out for one another.”
The defusing could take up to five hours, according to the authorities, who estimate that the evacuees will not be able to return home before the evening.
Admittedly this was an unusual Christmas day in Augsburg, a city spokesman told TV channel n24, adding that hopefully people would voluntarily leave their homes given the expected “force of the explosion” during the defusing of the bomb.
More than 70 years after the end of the war, unexploded bombs are still found buried on German territory, vestiges of the intense bombing campaigns by the Allied forces against Nazi Germany.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Saturday flagged off the One Lagos Fiesta (OLF), urging youths and entrepreneurs in the state to take full advantage of the N25billion Employment Trust Fund (ETF) initiative of his administration to grow their businesses and become self reliant.
Speaking at the Agege Stadium on day one of the annual end of the year revue put together by the state government, Ambode said the ETF was specifically designed to create greater opportunities for youths to be gainfully engaged and contribute meaningfully to the growth of Lagos.
The governor said over N6billion has already been earmarked to be disbursed annually through the ETF initiative, and that about N1billion of the fund will be pushed to the Agege division.
“I want to encourage all our youths because we are creating greater opportunities for all of you. I want you to take opportunity of applying for the Employment Trust Fund. We have monies already established to take care of your expertise.
“Those of you who are very creative; those of you who are artistic; those of you who are entrepreneurial in outlook; we have money that we will be ready to give to you to start your own business.
“We have earmarked over N6billion and we intend to push N1billion to this particular division. So, it is left for all of you to bring out your best. Whatever it is that you are doing, if you can’t get a white collar job, the ETF is there for you to help promote your business,” Ambode said.
While expressing the resolve of the government to use entertainment, arts and sports to promote tourism, the governor assured that his administration will continue to open up the tourism potential of the state with the view to getting the best from the youths.
To this end, the Governor said by 2017, government would construct an art theatre and a cinema in Igando and also build five new theatres in Ikorodu, Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Badagry and Epe to give greater opportunities to the youths.
He, however, urged the people to remain peaceful and shun any criminal activity.
Explaining the rationale behind OLF, Ambode said it was a way of creatively engaging the youths to bring out the best in them, saying that the 2016 edition was arranged to be better, bigger and bolder than that of 2015, adding that a total of 40 shows would hold simultaneously for eight days in Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Agege and Victoria Island.
Earlier, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, commended Ambode for the initiative, especially for flagging the fiesta off in Agege, saying it was a thing of joy that people could have the best of fun in the area without having to travel to a far place.
He urged the people to maintain peace and say no to all forms of criminality.
Entertainers who performed on the opening day in Agege include Sir Shina Peters, Queen Salawa Abeni, Phyno, MI and Reminisce, with comedian, Omo Baba, anchoring.
