Later, in March 2007, Punahou’s black student, Rik Smith, two years older than Barack, said these words for Chicago Tribune“Punahou was an amazing school. But it could be a lonely place. Those of us who were black did feel isolated – there’s no question about that.” Barack was a good but not an outstanding student. Basketball was one of the main part of Obama’s school life. Student Years and Law Career

After graduating from the high school, Barack Obama was accepted by several colleges. The young man decided to go to Los Angeles and enroll at Occidental College. He made this decision because he met a young woman in Hawaii who lived in a suburb of Los Angeles. She had been vacating with her parents when they met each other. At the college, he decided to take advantage of a transfer program and moved to Columbia University in New York City. Barack was 20 years old when he arrived in New York in August 1981. New York City changed him. He clearly understood that he did not want to live like his middle-class Black American friends. Barack immersed himself in studies and worked hard.
In 1983, Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University with a major in Political Science. In more than twenty years, Obama still remembers his academic experience as a tough period of life. Most of his time he found himself spending hours in the local library. He also regrets the lack of socializing and a monk style of behavior. Throughout the whole year after graduation, Obama worked as a project coordinator in a global business-consulting firm Business International Group in New York. Soon, he moved to Chicago to work as the executive director of Developing Communities Project from June 1985 to May 1988. Working in Chicago, Obama had to organize the church-funded Developing Communities Project (DCP) and also to pressure Chicago’s authorities to improve a maintained public housing project’s conditions. During three years as the DCP’s director, Obama managed to grow organization’s staff from 1 to 13 and grew its annual budget from $70,000 to $400,000. Later, he would admit that the community organizer job gave him a deep immersion into the African-American community’s life. With her support, Obama announced his candidacy to replace Alice in the Illinois legislature. The future President won that election although Alice Palmer decided to be a candidate for that legislature again after her congressional campaign faltered.
The start of Obama’s state senator career was frustrating. He saw black Democratic colleagues did not approve his refused to withdraw from the election race for Palmer, and Republicans controlled the state Senate. However, Barack’s communication skills and ability to establish business relationships with senate’s colleagues helped him even while Democrats was in the minority to get campaign finance reform and crime legislation.  When Democrats won control of the Senate after the 2002 elections, Obama became a leading legislator passing about 300 bills that were intended to help the poor, children, senior citizens and labor unions.

Despite the significant progress, Obama made a serious misstep when he took part in the Democratic primary run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000. Then his main opponent was Bobby Rush, a four-term incumbent candidate. Obama lost the primaries to Rush by a 30 percent of the margin point, recalling it an unhealthy race.
Undeterred, he began to prepare for a 2004 race for the U.S. Senate. He knew the incumbent Senator Peter Fitzgerald was unpopular and did not plan to run for reelection. After 9/11 attacks in 2001, Obama took opposition stance to the U.S. President, George W. Bush. In October 2002, Obama spoke against a resolution authorizing to launch a war in Iraq at Chicago’s Federal Plaza by saying“What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war … what I am opposed to is the attempt … to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income – to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the great Depression. That’s what I’m opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics.” In the future, this political position worked to his advantage, because the war in Iraq was becoming unpopular.

Then Barack Obama led the political struggle against his opponent Republican Jack Ryan, a wealthy former investment banker. Nevertheless, in June 2004, Jack withdrew from the race because of public scandalous allegations made by his ex-wife Jeri Lynn Ryan. In August 2004, the Republican Party put forward a new candidate, Alan Keyes, a diplomat and former presidential candidate. Taking part in a televised debate, Obama and Keyes showed opposing views on abortion, gun control, stem cell research, school vouchers and tax cuts. Mark Zuckerberg Childhood Biography

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, and grew up in the suburbs of New York, Dobbs Ferry. He was the second of four children and the only son in the educated family. Mark’s father, Edward Zuckerberg, is a dentist and mother, Karen Zuckerberg, is a psychiatrist. His father owned a dental practice next to the family house. Mark and his three sisters, Arielle, Randi, and Donna, were raised in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
Mark Zuckerberg Biography
Mark Zuckerberg Childhood
Mark got interested in programming yet in elementary school. The fact that the world is divided between programmers and users, Mark found out when he was 10 years old and got his first PC Quantex 486DX on the Intel 486.
From Mark Zuckerberg biography we found out he was taught Atari BASIC Programming by his father, and when Mark was about 12, he used Atari BASIC to create a messenger, which he called “ZuckNet.” It made all the computers connected to each other and allowed to transfer messages between the house and dental office. His father installed the messenger on his computer in his dentist office, and the receptionist could inform him when a new patient arrived. Mark also enjoyed developing games and communication tools and as he said he was doing it just for fun. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, even hired a computer tutor David Newman, who gave his son some private lessons.
Also being at high school, Mark wrote an artificially intelligent media player Synapse for MP3-playlists that carefully studied the preferences of a user and was able to generate playlists ‘guessing,’ which tracks a user wanted to listen to. Microsoft and AOL got an unusual interest in Synapse media player and wanted to acquire it. However, the young talent rejected the offer of the IT-giants and then politely rejected their invitation to cooperate. Just like that, Mark Zuckerberg refused from dozens, maybe even hundreds of thousands of dollars, and work at one of the top IT-corporations.
Soon Mark Zuckerberg studied at the Academy of Phillips Exeter, an exclusive preparatory school in New Hampshire. He showed good results there in science and literature, receiving a degree in classics. He also showed a great talent in fencing and even became the school captain of the fencing team. Yet Mark Zuckerberg stayed fascinated by coding and wanted to work on the development of new software.
In 2002, after graduating Phillips Exeter, Zuckerberg entered Harvard University. By his second year in the Ivy League, he had gained a reputation as a software developer on campus. It was then when he wrote a program CourseMatch, which helped students choose their subjects on the basis of lists of courses from other users.

FaceMash – A Fun Site for Voting

In 2003, once summer evening when Mark Zuckerberg suffered from insomnia in the Harvard dormitory room, he got an idea to create a site called FaceMash. Mark decided to hack the database of Harvard, where the students uploaded their profile pictures. He quickly wrote a program that randomly selected two pictures of two random female students and put them next to each other, asking “Who is hotter?”, giving the option for voting.
The process was in full swing and site was visited by most of the students at Harvard. When the number of visitors exceeded the limit, the server crashed due to overload. Mark appeared before the committee on computer hacking. Of course, nobody told Mark Zuckerberg ‘Well done!’ and he received a disciplinary action, and had noticed that such kind of things cause stormy interest in society. By the way, Harvard has refused to comment on the incident up till now.

The Rising of Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg Biography
Divya Narendra, Co-founded HarvardConnection.
About ten months before the Zuckerberg’s FaceMash epic, one of the students of Harvard – Divya Narendra – had already spoken with the idea of creating a social network exclusively for Harvard students, many of whom were suffering from emotional stiffness. And not have ‘aliens’ engaged into the network, Narendra suggested using Harvard email address as the main username.
Divya Narendra’s partners were twins Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. The father of the Winklevoss twins, Howard Winklevoss, is a successful financial consultant and put in his sons a lot of efforts and money – so the problem with the initial capital for the future network could be solved easily.
In conversation with Mark, Narendra said that the project would be called Harvard Connection (later renamed to ConnectU), and its members would post on the Internet their photos, personal information, and useful links. The tasks of Mark Zuckerberg included programming of the site and creating a special source code, which would allow the system to work as quickly as possible.
Mark Zuckerberg Biography

After a private meeting with Narendra and the Winklevoss twins, Zuckerberg agreed to join in the work, but the potential of his new partners he estimated skeptically. While working on Harvard Connection, he got a fantastic idea for his own social network.
On February 04, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg registered the domain name TheFacebook.com, now known throughout the world as Facebook.com. However, it functioned only within Harvard.
After Zuckerberg and his partner Eduardo Saverin realized that there were already 4,000 users registered on Facebook, they came to the conclusion that they needed services of new programmers. One of them was a Mark’s neighbor, Darren Moskowitz, who further opened the Facebook service to students at Columbia University, Stanford, and Yale.
Around the same time after the IPO, Zuckerberg owned 503.6 million shares. And now Zuckerberg controls nearly 60% of the company’s votes, 35% – Eduardo Saverin, and 5% went to the newcomer Moskowitz. Another friend of Mark, Chris Hughes, was assigned as the Press Attache of Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg Biography
TheFacebook.com in April 2004.
Some time later, the registration was opened to all students. The main condition was the availability of an email address in the .edu zone, which also indicated a person’s belonging to the education sector.
It must be said that at first this tactic worked out nicely. The project attracted audience attention of sufficient quality. When a user was trying to sign up, he had to fill out a detailed profile, and in addition to the email address in the .edu zone, it was requested to add a real profile picture. If people used avatars instead of real pictures their profiles were deleted.
Soon, Facebook went beyond the education sector, becoming more and more popular. Mark Zuckerberg started looking for investors. The first investments Mark received from one of the founders of PayPal, Peter Thiel, who is well known throughout Silicon Valley. Peter Thiel allocated $500,000, and that amount was sufficient for immediate Facebook purposes. The project began to evolve rapidly. In less than a year after it was founded more than 1 million people joined the social network. For further development of Facebook, they needed more investments. Accel Partners invested in Facebook $12.7 million and then Greylock Partners added to this amount $27.5 million.
By 2005, Facebook became accessible for all educational institutions and universities in the USA. Zuckerberg still believed that his project is a social network for students, but the interest of users to Facebook grew exponentially. Then it was decided to make a registration accessible to the public. And after this, a Facebook ‘epidemic’ started.
Mark Zuckerberg Biography

The main thing that immediately attracted users in Facebook is that friends who meet in real life now could communicate with each other online. It was something new.
The Facebook audience grew rapidly, but the monetization of the project still remained unclear. Everyone expected that the main instrument should be context advertising. The fact is that every Facebook user fills sufficiently detailed profile, which can be used to show relevant advertisements. Obviously, that would open up enough options to advertisers, who may be of interest to their audience. But Facebook continued to grow its audience. When they got over 50 million users, large companies began to offer Zuckerberg to sell them the project. So, one time even Yahoo! offered $900 million dollars for Facebook. Impressive sum, but it absolutely did not satisfy Mark. Facebook biography and Mark Zuckerberg success story is quite intriguing, isn’t it?

Lawsuits against Facebook

The Facebook project launch was accompanied by series of scandals. Six days later after launching the site, senior students brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra accused Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea. They claimed that in 2003 hired Zuckerberg to make him complete the establishment of the social network HarvardConnection.com. According to their testimonies, Zuckerberg did not provide them the results of his work but used the original source code to create Facebook.
In the same year, Narendra and the Winklevoss twins launched their own network renamed to ConnectU. And they continued to attack on Mark Zuckerberg, complaining Harvard administration and The Harvard Crimson newspaper. Initially, Zuckerberg urged journalists not to publish the investigation: he showed them what supposedly he did for HarvardConnection, and explained that those developments did not have any relation to Facebook. But very inappropriately, another Harvard student – John Thomson – in personal conversations started saying that Zuckerberg stole one of his ideas for Facebook. The newspaper decided to publish the article, and it offended Mark Zuckerberg very much.
Mark Zuckerberg Biography
Newspaper clip from The Harvard Crimson article published on May 28, 2004.
Zuckerberg took revenge on The Harvard Crimson. According to Silicon Alley Insider, in 2004, he breaks the mailboxes of two journalists from The Harvard Crimson, using the newly launched Facebook. He found users who were involved in the newspaper and browsed their logs (i.e. history) of incorrectly entered passwords in Facebook. Zuckerberg’s expectations were met: two employees of the newspaper absentmindedly tried to login Facebook with passwords from their mailboxes. Silicon Alley Insider wrote that Zuckerberg got lucky: he had a chance to read the correspondence about him between the editorial office and HarvardConnection.
The Winklevoss twins and Narendra filed a lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg, but the court rejected their claim. They were persistent and filed another lawsuit. This time, the court examined the code sources to understand whether they were actually stolen. But the truth was still not clear. The examination results were not announced. In 2009, Zuckerberg agreed to pay $45 million ($20 million in cash, and the remaining amount in Facebook shares) ConnectU as part of the court settlement. The case was closed. By that time ConnectU had less than 100,000 users, Facebook boasted about 150 million users.
The Winklevoss twins yet did not calm down and filed a petition in the U.S. Court of Appeals, but they were denied a retrial. According to their lawyer Jerome Falk, the appellate court refused to take a review of the case based only on the parties’ settlement agreement, which states that members of the trial after the signing of the document does not have the right to resume the trial. In counsel’s view, the decision was illegal, as Mark Zuckerberg in a proceeding in 2008 provided false information about the company’s value.
On May 17, 2011, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss filed another lawsuit against the owner of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg to the U.S. Supreme Court. That was the latest attempt by the brothers to make the court reconsider the case.

Pastor Ashimolowo Loses $4.8million To Ponzi Scheme

Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo of the Kingsway International Christian Centre has lost $4.8 million to a Ponzi scheme after trustees carelessly invested money in it, according to The Christian Post, a United Kingdom based website.
The scam was the brainchild of former Premier League soccer player, Richard Rufus, who used to be a defender for Charlton Athletic. He promised investors along with the church a return as high as 55 per cent.
The Christian Post reporting the findings of an inquiry published 14 December by the Charity Commission for England and Wales revealed that the Kent-based 12,000 members Christian Centre suffered a net loss of about $4.8 million (£3.9 million) after its trustees invested over $6.1 million (£5 million) in four instalments between June 2009 and June 2010. Mr. Rufus was a member and former trustee of the church.
Mr. Rufus had guaranteed that the investments would earn a sizeable return totalling about 55 percent in a year.He was last year found guilty of defrauding about 100 investors out of a total of $10,731,159 (£8,682,343) in the £16-million investing scheme.
Kingsway International Christian Centre was said to be the single largest investor in the scheme.
The church has a 12,000-member megachurch in Britain.
The Charity Commission said in the report that the church’s trustees handed over an initial investment and entered into an agreement in which they were guaranteed that investment would earn a profit of about five percent per month, with the exception of August and December when they were guaranteed profits of about 2.5 percent.
“The inquiry established that in practice, however, the investments resulted in a net loss of £3.9 million to the charity,” the report explains.
The report states that the church’s trustees who handed over the funds were guilty of “mismanagement.”

Nurse pulls off baby’s hand during delivery

An auxiliary nurse, identified only as Oyekanmi, has been arrested by the police for her role in the death of a baby she took delivery of in the Odogunyan, Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim’s mother, Adeola, had been taken to Oyekanmi’s residence last Saturday when she went into labour.
Oyekanmi, while attempting to force the delivery, was said to have pulled off the baby’s hand.
She was said to have advised that the child be taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where the dead child was finally delivered.
Doctors at the hospital were reported to have queried the baby’s parents on what truly transpired, and they opened up.
The hospital management then alerted the police to the incident.
A source said Oyekanmi was picked up by the police.
The source said, “What happened was that the auxiliary nurse tried to deliver the woman of the baby, during which there was a complication. But she continued and in the end, the hand of the baby was pulled off while she tried to force the child out from the mother’s womb.
“Afterwards, they quickly packed the woman together and brought her to the general hospital. It had become a critical case by then. The remains of the dead child were brought out, while the matter was reported to the police.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing.
She said, “The doctor at the hospital discovered that something was amiss after taking a close look at the dead child and seeing that one hand had been pulled off. All the parties were invited to make statements. It is a case of infanticide; investigations are ongoing.”
The spokesperson for the state’s Ministry of Health, Adeola Salako, promised to get back to our correspondent, but she had yet to do so as of press time.

WAEC Laments Cheating Among Blind Candidates | Says There are Not Enough Trained Teachers

Head of Test Administration of WAEC in Nigeria, Frances Iweha-Onukwu.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) , says blind candidates also cheat during examinations.
The Head of Test Administration of WAEC in Nigeria, Mrs
Frances Iweha-Onukwu , made the revelation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday, saying that they cheat by colluding.
Iweha-Onukwu said the reason could be that the candidates were usually not well equipped individually for the examinations.
She added that this had been responsible for what she described as ‘not too wonderful performance’ among the blinds.
“We have discovered that there is usually high incidence of collusion among blind candidates during examinations. That is why their performance has not really been anything wonderful. Our society is such that there have not been adequate and conscious efforts to take care of the challenged. There have not been enough trained personnel to guide blind candidates before being exposed to major external examination’’, she said.
She lamented a situation where just one teacher who studied Special Education in higher institution is employed to cater for the needs of physically challenged persons of various dimensions. She said the situation must be reviewed.
“I cannot explain how one teacher, who studied special education can be given the singular task of meeting the academic needs of the deaf, dumb, the blind and all others. Meanwhile, there are candidates who need personalised attention on one-on-one basis.
If we intend to give the best and all-inclusive education, Federal Government must employ more trained teachers in special education to take care of the different defects among the physically challenged students.
There must also be consciousness in policy formulation that will take care of these persons. This is because there is ability in disability. These persons can do better if adequate care is given,’’ Iweha-Onukwu added.

Man Arrested For Allegedly Planning to Bomb Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos

The suspect, Abiodun Amos and the explosives
One Abiodun Amos, 43, aka Senti, an indigene of Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, has been arrested by the Police for allegedly planning to blow up Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
PUNCH reports that the suspect was arrested at Majidun, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
According to a Police source:
The suspect is a member of a militant group operating from the creeks of Ikorodu and Arepo areas of Lagos and Ogun states. The police got an intelligence report from the Office of the National Security Adviser that Amos and his gang members wanted to blow up the Third Mainland Bridge.
After receiving the report, the IGP, Ibrahim Idris , directed the IRT operatives to commence a full-scale investigation and it was discovered that the group actually planned to blow up the bridge at the end of November 2016. The suspect, who coordinated the plan, was arrested before the scheduled date.
The group was trailed to a river bank in the Majidun area, where the suspect, an expert in explosive, was arrested. Two Ak-47 rifles hidden in a Ghana-Must-Go bag were found in his possession and he led operatives to a vehicle parked discreetly within Ikorodu, and a large cache of dynamite and detonators were recovered from its boot.
Amos said that his gang went into kidnapping after military operations in the creeks around Lagos and Ogun states. He said that the plan to bomb Third Mainland Bridge was initiated by the gang head, General Ossy.
“We went into bank robberies and kidnapping because we wanted to get government’s attention and all we wanted was for them to grant us amnesty and offer us pipeline protection contract. We have made several appeals, but the government is not listening to us.
General Ossy said if we didn’t blow up the Third Mainland Bridge, government would not listen to us. We had concluded plans and we decided to carry out the attack by November ending. I am the group’s explosive expert. We were about going into the creek to conclude plans on how to carry out the attack when I was arrested,” Amos said.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Don Awunah , confirmed the report.
“An arrest was made of an individual. While the police operatives were pursuing another one in a vehicle, he abandoned the vehicle and ran but he was tracked down. Some explosives were discovered in the vehicle and two Ak-47 guns were recovered from him,” Awunah said.

Man Arrested for Plotting to Kidnap 2-year-old in Ogun

The suspect, Suleiman Seidu | Photo Credit: PUNCH
The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Suleiman Seidu, over the alleged attempt to kidnap a two-year-old boy at Owode, Ogun.
The operatives got a hint of the kidnap attempt of the boy from one of the two persons whom the prime suspect had contracted to perpetrate the crime.
Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police command, SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the arrest to newsmen on Tuesday, said the suspect was arrested on Saturday.
Badmos said that a member of the RRS decoy team posed as a lady that the kidnapper sought to help give the child good care.
She said that for more than two weeks, while the kidnapping plan took shape, the investigator, pretending as an accomplice, was exchanging information with the prime suspect.
The police spokesperson said that the suspect assured the accomplice that he had gotten a motorcycle to use in kidnapping the boy, and would demand N10 million as ransom.
Badmos said the prime suspect demanded for such money because he believed that the father of the boy, who is a landlord and dealer in electrical appliances, would be able to pay.
“When the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni was informed of the jurisdictional challenge of arresting the suspect in Ogun, he ordered the decoy team to proceed, assuring them that he would contact his colleague in Ogun.
One of the suspects was shocked by the insistence of the prime suspect to kidnap the little boy and request for N10 million ransom.
He claimed to know that it was going to boomerang if he concealed the information and not inform the police.
Then he called one of his friends who resides in Lagos and explained the kidnap attempt on the boy.
It was his friend that told him to come to Lagos to inform the RRS, which he did,” Badmos said.
She said that the prime suspect had earlier kidnapped two persons in Kogi, where he collected huge ransom from their families.
Badmos said the suspect had confessed to the crime and claimed that he initiated the plan in order to get money to pay his mother’s hospital bills.
“I have been on the trail of that young boy and his parents for quite a while now. I conceived the idea to kidnap him when I was looking for money for my mother’s hospital bills.
I wanted to demand for N10 million ransom, but if his parents could not afford the whole, at least I was expecting N3 million at the end of the day,” she quoted the suspect as saying.
Badmos said that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of Police investigation.
She said the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

Tragic! Woman Beheaded in Afghanistan After Entering City to Shop Without her Husband

A 30-year old woman was beheaded at a small remote village in the Latti in Sar-e-Pul province of Afghanistan after she went shopping in the city market without her husband or any male relative.
The Village of Latti is under Taliban control and a provincial Governor in Afghanistan revealed that the people who murdered her were Taliban fighters.
Under the Taliban rules women are not allowed to go alone to public places without any close male relative accompanying them.
Although her identity is yet to be revealed officials say the reason why the victim went to the market alone was because her husband was away in Iran and they do not have any children.
They haven’t made an arrest yet and the Taliban are denying any involvement in the death of the 30 year old woman.
This story gives me the chills, how very unfortunate. We can only imagine what her family and friends are going through now.

Israel-Palestine Conflict: John Kerry and Benjamin Netanyahu Disagree over 2-State Solution

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday warned that the two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinian Territories is in “serious jeopardy.’’
The United States allowed a UN resolution condemning Israeli settlements to pass last week in an effort to preserve the possibility of such an outcome to the enduring conflict, Kerry said.
The outgoing secretary of state, who led the last attempt to broker a Middle East peace deal, used the more than an hour-long speech to express his frustration with the Israeli government and outline his vision for a future settlement between Israel and Palestine.
“The two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace between the Israelis and Palestinians,” Kerry said, adding that it was also the only way to ensure Israel’s future as both a Jewish and democratic state.
Video
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed Kerry’s address as “skewed against Israel.’’
“For over an hour, Kerry obsessively dealt with settlements and barely touched upon the root of the conflict – Palestinian opposition to a Jewish state,’’ Netanyahu said in a statement.
In Washington, Kerry noted that before last week, the Obama administration had been the only administration since 1967 that had not allowed any UN resolution to pass that Israel opposed.
The U.S. would not have been true to its values if it allowed a “viable two-state solution to be destroyed before our own eyes,’’ Kerry said in defending the U.S. abstention at the Security Council.
Successive U.S. administrations of both parties have supported a two-state solution, although president-elect Donald Trump recently named an ambassador to Israel that rejects it.
Kerry also said that contrary to Israeli accusations, “the U.S. did not draft or originate this resolution.’’
The secretary of state said trends on the ground between Israel and the Palestinian Territories – including terrorist attacks, growing numbers of settlements and a “seemingly endless occupation are cementing an irreversible one-state reality.’’
In candid remarks about the current Israeli government, Kerry called it the most right-wing in the country’s history, saying it has an agenda “driven by the most extremist elements.’’
The U.S. cannot be expected to support the agendas of extremists on either side to create a “unitary state,’’ he said.
He complained bitterly about the increased number of Israeli settlements on the West Bank, saying they are putting a peace deal further out of reach and “defining’’ the country’s future.
Kerry reiterated the U.S. belief that a two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians and laid out a six-point plan that the two sides could follow.
“We all know that a speech alone won’t produce peace,’’ he said.
But he encouraged the parties to take his suggestions seriously and create the conditions for successful talks.
Earlier Wednesday, a high-ranking Israeli minister lashed out at Kerry, calling his plan to speak on the Middle East peace process “pathetic.’’
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan also called Kerry’s address “anti-democratic’’ because it will tie U.S. president-elect Donald Trump to positions that are difficult to change, according to a report.
Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to accuse Obama of treating Israel with “total disdain and disrespect.’’
“They used to have a great friend in the U.S., but not anymore,’’ Trump said of Israel.
“Stay strong Israel, January 20th is fast approaching,’’ he continued.
Trump has named bankruptcy lawyer David Friedman, who has said that he does not think Israeli settlement activity is illegal and opposes a two-state solution, as his U.S. ambassador to Israel.
Jerusalem’s planning committee cancelled a scheduled discussion about approving the construction of nearly 500 housing units in East Jerusalem without explanation.
However, hours before Kerry was set to speak, the committee decided to approve a settlement housing project in Jerusalem’s predominantly Palestinian neighbourhood of Silawn, according to the report.
The move is in direct defiance of the resolution’s recommendations.

“The Book will be taken to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Burutai, for onward presentation to Mr President.
“We have also made a lot of arrests. Our troops in Damboa arrested about 15 Boko Haram members. We also arrested one Musa from Potiskum on Christmas day which was Dec.25.
“On Dec. 26 our troops also intercepted two Boko Haram suspects in Maiduguri.
“We, therefore, warn residents of the state to be wary of people coming to hide in and around their houses.
“We are also warning residents to report any suspected Boko Haram members hiding in their houses to the relevant security agencies and any failure to do that would tantamount to supporting and sympathising with the sect’s activities,’’ Irabor said.(NAN)
