Fresh revelations from declassified files of the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) show that the Americans knew exactly how then Head of State General Muhammadu Buhari would be removed from power in the 1980s and who would do it.
According to information in the files in NAIJ.com’s possession, the CIA predicted correctly the ouster of Buhari by a coup and the fact that it would be carried out by former military head of state Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida who the files also tipped as the next head of state.
The CIA report, which was compiled in December 1984, noted that Buhari’s removal was imminent because of the declining political and economic situation of Nigeria at the time and which Buhari has could not improve on.
This development had brought disaffection among the ranks of the military officers holding political offices at the time, and the CIA predicted that Buhari had just a short time in power because the younger officers were ready for a change.
Recall that earlier CIA files analysed by NAIJ.com predicted that General Buhari would last only a short time in office because of the growing resentment of his style of leadership among younger officers including those from the southern part of the country.
